i am looking at getting some new tyre's for my rs, 195 50 15's, and was looking at toyo proxes t1r, can anyone recommend these or anything else?

depending on how often you use your car and in what weather, if only dry use and no wet use or damp cold use then why not go for toyo r888's?
if all weather then t1r are a good tyre.

888's would be a good tyre i imagine if you only used your car for track days in the summer, sprints and the occasional sunday rant...

Never had a set but i assume like all other sticky rubber will wear very quickly under normal usage and as I guess its all rain for the next 6months........

I highly recommend continental premium sport, they wear very well dry grip is very good and wet grip is exceptional (better than the toyos in the wet/damp), the brake away is very safe and predictable, had these on my sierra and now my rst.

Avon ZV3's aren't too shabby for the price, Michelin pilots served me well in a Mondeo.

I would go for a normal(ish) tyre then.... toyo's, conti's etcetc. Im sure you won't notice a huge difference to be honest, mine are also 205's rather than 195's so perhaps toyos are better on the rst wheel....

I was going to go for proxes, but got a good deal on Yokohama S drive, and they are the best tyre i have ever used!!! Awesome performance in both wet and dry, i would recommend them to anyone

I've used proxes for years, starting with the T1S's before moving onto the later model T1R's. Both very good. My missus does similar mileage in her daily driver and has no issues. Last set were fitted about 2yrs ago and still loads of tread left. I got about 12k on my Vec with 195/50/15 but it's a heavier car and I drive on country roads commuting so they got some hammer on the bumpy roads Still lasted well though, and confidence inspiring in all weather. Also got them on the S1 and will give you the same report - very good long lasting good tyres...definately for the money you'll pay - around Ł50 a tyre.

Just moved onto the Pirelli ZE912's on the vec in a different size but now they're worn in a bit they are getting better my view on cornering abilities. Only done a few hundred miles on them so far. Roughly the same price, but for the 50's I'd go toyo.

Goodyear F1's and Michelin Pilots are another couple I rate. Have the goodyears on my standard wheels and they are very good. Had the pilots on another car and again very good - but expensive in both cases compared to the toyos.

I've used conti's, rainsports, f1 gsd3, yoki, vredestein sportrac 3, T1S, T1R, and a SURPRISE TYRE!!.
F1 I wouldn't have if they were free, seriously I wouldn't use them, of the sts I have used 4 out of 10 developed sidewall bulges, never due to kerbing either some were on inside, it's never happened on any other tyre either.
Yoki I wouldn't have, ok in dry crap in wet,, conti I found good long lasting, but not6 a performance league tyre.
The T1S I found ace, really good, suffered shoulder wear badly which was supposed to have been fixed on the updated version the R, but my experience showed it was made worse.
On the same car same driver same weight everything, the T1S lasted 16,000 miles, the T1R, lasted a fraction under 6,000 miles and was shit in comparison to the s, in the wet, pretty much the same in the dry, but had harder sidewall, the car was a mk3 astra 1.4 auto, so how someone got 12K from a veccy I don't know.
Vredestein Sportrac 3, and Rainsports very very similar tyre, excellent in both wet and dry, in wet rainsports had edge, in dry sportrac, but these two were better than any of the other tyres mentioned so far.
I found in the wet that the rainsport and sportrac 3 were faster on the corners than the F1 was in the dry, shame as Goodyear had a awsome tyre in the Eagle Ventura, now discontinued, best wet weather tyre by a mile I've used.
SURPRISE TYRE, HANCOOK V12 VENTUS EVO,
I now run these, the grip is amazing in the wet, but even better in the dry, have these on the cossie at the mo, too early to tell about wear rates.
I didn't buy the "cheap sounding" Hancook, in a effort to save money, as they are nearly twice the price of the T1R for example, I will happily pay 10 X the regular tyre price for better tyres, I bought them as I used a car with them on, and was stunned, expecting them to be ditch finders.

what model of conti makes a HUGE difference... My girl friends car has rainsports on (mgf) i think it had mitchelins on before, and to be honest im not that impressed with the rainsports, but they are wearng very well....

Hancook i believe are owned by another (bigger) company.... I forget which one now, but their tyres are the old range of the bigger firm! just with out the big name price tag. So i wouldn't be overly shocked at how good they are, (if what i said was true lol)

But at the end of the day i think you will get ALOT of conflicting opinions. Its just what you prefer, i find a particular type of tyre suits an individual car and perhaps not another (even if they are both FWD etc) due to geometry differences.

Example being my car is handling ok at the moment, but its slammed on coilovers so the geometry will probably be totally different to yours... I went from 17" alloys with proxys on... really low stiff side walls, loads of negative camber NO GRIP and a shit load of torque steer. Went back to 15" on the conti's with a normal tyre wall, same negative camber, but more tyre squirm due to the larger wall so a larger contact patch, handles far better LOADS less torque steer etc....

But i couldn't say the contis were better than toyos because the test was so unfair.

I would say: try a few brands/models over a few years or so and see which is the best all rounder FOR YOU and your car.

I've just jumped across to the Toyo Proxes T1-R on my Audi after using Continental Sport Contact 3's.

I rate the T1-R quite highly, dry weather grip so far seems good and the wet weather grip is quite acceptable as well although not as good as the Continentals they replaced. Will have to see what they are like on wear as they'e only been on a week but I only got 15mnths out of the last full set

got t1r's on mine felt like a different car after i fit them steering was much lighter at low speeds eg parking and good wet and dry grip and only cost me 20quid a tyre too (were on special offer at topgear which we had a franchise of at the time)
