guys how can i tell if ive got a s1 gearbox or a normal mk3 5 speed without taking it apart, i got it out of a mk3 cab running turbo power at about 180bhp, would a standard box blow up by then or is the only difference the lsd? cheers gary

only way you can tell is by taking a drive shaft out and looking through the hole, if you can see a straight bar in the middle then its not a lsd, with a lsd you should see a little round hole.

i agree with above but the only real way to see difference with an s1 and s2 box(lsd aside is tolook in the bellhousing s1s have a coreplug near mainshaft and s2s dont!! if it has neither plus it has the bar as coswurv says then it is bog standard box, may i add these boxes are fine with an lsd fitted
anothe way to check is if it has driveshafts fitted the turn one of the shafts , if the opposite shaft turns the same way it has lsd, if it turns opposite way its non lsd
