That's not fair really fella. As I stated earlier the thread starter asked "what the pro's and con's were and whether it was worth it". His questions were answered. If he chooses to go his own route after being given the information then that is entirely up to him. No ones telling anybody how to mod their car that's down to each individual to decide what route they want to take

The whole point in a community such as PassionFord is that people get a lot of information for free from people that have a wealth of knowledge and experience.

well maybe this would be lots better if people could actually stick to pro's and cons, and not just stamp their feet, add lots of '!!!!!!!' and demand that their opinion is correct?

id say

pro's:

more efficient
easier to maintain
look much better

con's:

often too powerful
can cost more*

*cost depends how u price it up of course, as replacing a full drum set up with all new parts can exceed the cost of buying up rear disc bits (in my case definitely, as with some wheeling and dealing ive got a 4x4 rear set up with new discs and a bias valve for no more than it would have cost me for overhauling the drums)

People will always take the piss. Unfortunately it's the nature of the beast with these forums. Fortunately most of the time on here it is intended as nothing more than a bit of banter rather than anything more sinister

yeah i totally get what ya mean. I just get the feeling people spend more time taking the piss.. all be it in a bit of gest and not personal. It would make life alot easier if those with the knowledge were willing to share as opposed to rub it in peoples faces. We've all gotta learn somehow. Not saying this is always the case... but 9 times outta 10 lol.

(sorry dont wanna highjack your thread mate)

theres a big difference between giving knowledge out and talking crap, its all pretty basic theroy when it comes to using rear disks, when u brake, most of the power is going to front brakes, the back end is light, ok,u can adjust it up using a bias valve, but thats no help when your already facing the wrong way, u cant set it up for all weathers.Ive seen a few swap ends, im with the majority that say drums do the job perfectly,

Well just to throw my 1 cent into the ring!!!!!!!!!!There is no need to fit rear dics's to the rear if you want more braking power. The drums work fine. Now I have fitted dics's to the rear of my escort.Why????Well...1.I hated doing rear shoes, too fiddly with all them little springs etc 2.As my car is a track car its much easier to see the rate of wear on the rear stoppers by having a glance at a caliper than removing a drum to inspect the shoes.

Now on to the ass passing the front debate...............
Yes with rear dics's I did have trouble with the rear's locking up and the back stepping out.
How did I fix this??????????????.....................
Well I fitted a bias valve!!

Does the fitting of a bias valve not eliminate rear braking power, thus rendering the more efficent use of dics's a waste of time???

In short yes it does, but see my personnal points above as to why I fitted rear dics's.

So to some up......
Fitting rear dics's will not give better braking than the drums. But some people, like me just prefer the easier maintance of a caliper instead of the drum/shoe combo.

I myself can see how everyone who posted on this thread is right in their opinions, and at the end of the day its down to personnal choice.

But 1 thing is for sure, this thread gives every bit of knowledge to everyone who is considering a rear disc swap

And lastly, even though I dont have a big BHP escort,I hope I've not upset anyone by posting my views.Regards,Micky

i can't see what's wrong with fitting rear disks tbh, i understand why people think its pointless but where's the harm in a proper set-up set of brakes?!

Like Micky said, they're easier to replace parts and service and IMO look about 873x nicer than rank drums

finally we are getting somwhere in this thread lol

i did already try pretty clearly to point out that rear discs look a shed load nicer, and a crap load easier to maintain, and in some cases dnt cost any more to fit than replacing a complete drum set up

i actually think a lot of the time people only argue the case for drums on the rear as they are trying to convince THEMSELVES that their precious drums are the way forward

im with micky, id sooner undo a few bolts and drop a set of pads and discs off in seconds, rather than spend ages fiddling with shoes and springs and adjusters
