Question ZVH Pulley Spacer Query

I have just handed over my car and converted ZVH block to get the work carried out, but when mentioning the 2.5 - 3mm spacer needed behind the pulley, he looked at me a little confused. I know nothing, hence why asking you lot here..

Taken from Quantums page:
A 2.5 or 3mm spacer is needed behind the camshaft pulley to equalise the distances of the pulleys from the block so the cambelt runs fairly close to the centre of all the pulleys.

Is there are quick remedy to this, as in a shop bought spacer, or what else can be used?

I can't open the quantum spreadsheet as i havent got Exel on this computer.

A washer(s) with a decent size hole in to clear the cam diameter will suffice

I dont know as I havent looked at it yet. I have read though that it sometimes isnt needed. Only needed if the cambelt doesnt sit evenly across all pulleys.

The measuremnts of the washer would be inner diameter considering it has to go over a spindle which the pulley sits on. Thickness depends on the sitting of the cambelt. But again, i dont know as im not looking at/working on it.

yep thats true, 1.6 is to big.

What's news to you Vroooom, that it needs a spacer, or that it doesnt?

And yes, it uses a 1.3 tensioner

that it needs a tensioner, im in the middle of building one so soon will see for mysel. not saying it doesnt need a spacer I just didnt know.

Oh right, ok.

Going by a lot of thread i have read recently and going over the Quantums website with a fine tooth comb, i think i have all avenues covered now. Just wasnt sure what to use as a spacer.

all the zvh's ive done ive never had to use a spacer behind the cam pulley, also 1.3 tensioner is the way to go,

use a 13 cvh tensioner .plus the spacer you are on about for the cam .just use 1 from the crank pulley .dont forget that you still need 1 for the crank as well .plus use the 1900cvh american tall block head gasket .i think they are 40 quid from burton.by the way wot water pump plate are you using

I'm going to use a zetec steel gasket with BMW M20 head bolts on a 2.0.

What pistons/CR are you's using?

The spacers are needed with mine, but its not alot. I went and got 2 different sized spacers/washers (24mm & 28mm ID) from the local Farm store, costing a whole whopping 62p for 4 lol

Im having problems with my tensioner tho. Its a 1.3 tensioner, but its sitting too close to the water pump wheel. The belt could fit through ok, but the guy doing the work said he wouldnt be happy leaving it as it is as the belt could get jammed or snap because of it. He is now fabricating a new bracket for it.

I dont know as to why the 2 are so close as i have never heard of this before, but what he reckons is that its a possiblity that the holes for the water pump have been placed wrongly in the block. It was a toss up of him tapping new holes in the block, or fabricating the tensioner bracket... so we chose the bracket fabrication, just in case!

Also, is there anywhere that ya can buy a zvh dipstick tube bracket? We're making one if not.

Are they new tensioner bolt holes? Looking at yours, imagine your tensioner is bolted into the holes below it... Thats where mine sat. See what i mean about too close now! I think my fitter has fabricated my tensioner bracket now so that it sits higher, like the one in that pic. Thanks mate

yeah you need to drill and tap new tensioner holes. Not hard to do. I'd do it this way as you dont want0your cambelt coming off!

thats my build zvh. the left tensioner hole is original and at the right i have to drill but its a black top.

Just got off the phone to the guy doing all the work and he said that the re-fabricated tensioner is doing just fine. The engines running and everything seems fine and sturdy as it should.
