Firstly check that you have water in your system!!
Then check the wire is still conected to the sender (exhaust manifold side of head, right hand corner).
Then check continuity from that wire to the gauge.
Then change the sender.
Then finally change gauge!

If there was no water it would go right down because the sender is a water temp sensor not a air temp sensor (which is all your left with when you loose all your water!)
Bit like when a hose splits the gauge goes right up as your loosing water then drops right down to cold and you think everything is ok....... till your head gasket goes 10 mins later

Always worth checking first!

If you have water in the cooling system then its a common fault. If the temperature gauge goes to the top then the centre piece of the temperature sensor has come loose and shorting against the sensor housing, (test by getting someone to watch the gauge and wiggle the connector), if it bottoms out then the wire is broken either in the connector housing or the wire itself. Put a new one )
