will the engine be properly converted for turbo use ie lower compression and thats it or will it be full blown ie steel rods, forged pistons etc. i know alot of people use the st 170 heads for their zetec turbo engines.

i gather by mentioning that engine youve either got one already or you can get one at a good price ????.
i suppose for a really cheap way of doing it might be a de compression plate but its not ideal if your wanting big power, if you have the funds then a proper engine rebuild is best for most power but with the added reliability to go with it, i dont think your management ( gotech ) will be a factor in the end power figure, itll def be down to your engine spec which will determine that.
if the st 170 engine is pretty much the same engine as a normal zetec then you would get a good figure, even if standard just low comp, but honestly mate proper build is the way to go if ya can.

The ST170 engine is a standard Zetec block with forged pistons and forged rods as standard. Perfect for a turbo just drop the compression a bit.
It will make the same power on any management system!

cheers dave. i have a 1.8 zetec block in my garage but i can get a st170 locally. i have mfi gotech so i was going to run the rs head on my zetecbut then i read about turboing a st170. the st170 route will be expensive as i would have to change management to run the st170 head. i think i will go down the zetec route.

yep forged steel rods, but aluminium cast pistons ??? , suppose it all depends now how far you wanna go ie the bhp etc youd like to see. dunno what boost youd be able to put through the engine if all youve done is lower the compression a touch though. but the engine is def a good engine.
one thing you may wanna check is if the standard gotech mfi could run such an engine though. if not take that cost into account when deciding bud.

The ST engine also has longer con rods to improve the rod ratio but you wont find that in any write up!
I am doing a ZVH for a customer at the moment using a standard bottom end off a ST170.
