take the plastic speedo drive out of the box and have a look at the teeth on it!! if its not that and every thing else is ok then its more than likely the diff bearings!
you say you changed the box but was it a new one or a 2nd hand one?

The plastic drive normally only breaks when the diff is on its way out. Sounds like a duff gearbox to me

gearbox was just a spare i had in the shed, it still works fine, goes in all gears and has no noises, the speedo hasn't worked for about 20k miles, (worked it out on sat nav and alot of remembering)

so i take the piece off that the speedo cable screws onto and replace it???
then see if it works? if its not that whats it likely to be??? cheers

the drive for the speedo going dont always mean the diff is shot.take the drive out and check to see how its worn if it is worn evenly then its just wear and tear. when i replaced mine the teeth were much smaller than the
new part so much so that i thought ford had gave me the wrong part.
not a nice job.getting the little retaining pin out can be a bastard

Been ages since I have done on in-situ, but grip it tightly with Moley's, then tap the Moley's with a hammer.
