The amal valve is an electromagnetic three way valve and is in fact the "interface" between the software and hardware in terms of boost control.

In other words, the ECU operates the Amal valve and this valve controls boost pressure.
It's a safe mode, when certain parameters are detected as harmfull then the ECU cuts the current to the amal valve and then boost pressure will be lower or in (safe mode).

All ERST had it fitted when they left the factory and no you don't NEED it.

reading into that, does it mean the engine will still run without but it could potentially massively overboost, be really fast and then go bang?!

Not really, the amal valve setup is "fail to safe". This means if the valve is at fault or doesn't get electricity the boost pressure will drop.

Try disconnecting your amal and take it for a spin. You'll notice that your car won't boost as high as normally.

You can leave the valve disconnected or take it completely out of the car but this will mean you have to manually adjust the boost setting to a higher level.
If you do this and the ECU reads dangerous parameters (such as high ACT or knocking), it can't drop the boost to protect your engine....

Just don't replace it with bleed valve And it's proper name is a Boost Control Solenoid

Leave it on for peace of mind, and so the ECU can do its job properly.

Bleed valves are shite unless setup right and used sensible! If I'm right "Amal" is the name of the company who produces these solenoids.

And indeed leave it on. Won't do any harm or make your car slower. In fact, it can be used as a simple 2 stage boost control. Just wire the switched earth via a manually operated switch and you can run a low and high boost at the flick of a switch.....
