ive spotted a turbo on ebay and asked what size the exhaust housing is,the reply i got was that its a standard 2wd cosworth but an erst exhaust elbow will bolt straight onto it,so does anybody have any idea if it will be a .48 exhaust housing or not

I don't know mate, but Karl @ NMS confirmed that my turbo has a .48 housing fitted (when the previous owner took it there once for a tune).

if its a RST exhaust housing it will be either .36 or .48.
but if its the cossie 3 bolt flange, it could be 0.48, 0.55 or .63.
The owner could easierly look at the turbo, and it will have the size engraved in the exhaust housing of the turbo.
