Default boostproblems

Hej everyone,

Having a problem again with my rst.

iIve changed my Turbo back to a standard one ( had a stage 3 t3 ) because my boost was coming in verry late and wasn't really driveable.
All worked fine so it seemed but had it on the rollers today for a good setup and there was a problem.
My boost isn't stable, it judders up to like 1 bar and a few seconds later its @ 0.9, then a few seconds later its @ 1 bar again.
The operator said he can't set it opproperly like this.
He set the roller @ a fixed speed and the bph went up and down like 10-15 bhp.
He said the problem could be in the wastegate sticking but i put the turbo on and the wastegate lever was running freely.

Anyone got a suggestion what could be wrong??

What intercooler you got?

Give us a breif engine spec mate.

ok then,

2 litre ZVH on mfi, standard head with kent 35, standard turbo, cosworth 4x4 intercooler.

Has the bottom end been 'low comp'?

Bottem end is'nt really low comp.

Got a CR of 8:1 using accrelite pistons.

a had a problem like this on mine. boost was all over the place, the amal vavle was knackered, replaced it for a bleed vavle and it been fine since

Are you quite sure you have set the Actuator pre-load correctly?

It's got about 3/4 of the hole preload on it, that schould be about 5mm or so.
I'll check it this afternoon.
But can this cause the weird boost variation?.

...and it's definately 3/4 hole shorter, not 3/4 hole longer?

uuuhhh, yes it most certenly is shorter as i have to pull the actuator rod out for about 5 mm

preload,
actuator diapham leak,
wastegate sticking once hot.

ok, the actuator is a -31 item of 2 years old but i've got anotherone somewhere so i'll try that first.

What can i do about sticking wastegat when hot? good clean?

Gregor, has the amal valve been discarded and replaced by the bleedvalve or are they operating along side each other.

If the amal valve is in any way attached, try and disconnect the wires. If the boost drops a bit but remains steady then your amal valve or electrical connection to your amal valve is faulty.

In the other case, test the wastegate by hand. You shouldn't feel ANY resistance at all.

Where did you go for a setup here in the Netherlands and how much does this cost?

Easyest way to cure a sticky wastegate,


once cooled down, remove actuator, and spray lots of WD40 into the shaft, and work it into it by opening and shutting it by hand, and using the WD40 and air compressor to force it in.


it should be smooth, You can test it when hot, to see if it goes stiff with heat.

Yoww Mark,

I completely replaced the amalvalve with the bleedvalve so can't be there.

I put this turbo on last month ( standard t3 ) and tried the wastegae before fitting and didn't feel any resistance at all when cold.
Maybe it's sticking when hot..

I went to a local tuner because i had to know if i could "use" my escort @ Landgraaf but as i said he couln't set it up all the way.
When he would it would cost about 240 €.
He's knows the ke-jet but i'm not convinced he knows all like in the UK..
