Default Changed Camshaft

well i finally got around to changing my cvh35 to a cvh34 today
took the old cam out and inspected the cam for worn lobes, happens to be that cylinder 4 exhaust outlet lobe was completely shagged the follower was curved and had pieces missing from it the inlet lobes seemed to be ok but all the outlet ones were worn out.
just out of interest, could this have effected power from the engine in major way?

Yes it could have affected power, just a shame that your CVH34 will look similar within 500 miles.

Number 4 is the favourite cylinder to wear cam lobes, apparently because of design faults on CVH heads.

I seriously do believe all the high revving is what kills the cams so quick, i ragged the shit out of my cabriolet one day and the cam went, yet the cam in my Orion which i use daily is still the original and is in a pretty fair state, 114k miles aswell! But it doesnt go anywhere near the rev limiter like the cabriolet did.......

Have you actually measured the cams?

i always measure cams before and after use.

As if you looking by eye, that wont really tell if its worn. as you can onle see the real fu-ked ones.

A lot of people give the Kent (and Piper cams) stick for clapping out but mine's been in for 4 years now and the car is still performing. Brother also runs with one in his FRST and again we've had not so much as a sniff of a problem

I only give them stick because of how many I have seen that are fucked after a very short time.

IMO it is the result of several things. The CVH Valve-train needs heavy springs to control it and this is only made worse by the poor quality chinese cam followers that Kent and Piper use. This, coupled with poor quality blanks, means the cams don't really stand a chance from the start.

Newman manufacture their followers out of steel bar and have actually put some thought into it and although they are a little agricultural, they do work.

CVH cams will always be a problem, but Newman is certainly the closest I have come to success, however, they don't have a great choice of off-the-shelf profiles. 1 infact, well 1 for CVH and one for ZVH.

yeah i know what you are saying.....but they will take a little bit of wear before they start getting noisy.

And to be honest until they wear to that extent and get noisy you don't generally notice any difference.

You don't hear the noise with hydraulics, until it gets bad. Solids are noisier, but the benefits of being able to reach a 7400rpm limiter if you so wish without the engine reducing itself to a spluttery mess far outweigh the noise.

i disagree there,

i've seen many worn cvh cam's that aren't that noisey.

People have different opinions on what noisey really is though!

it doesnt take much wear before the top end actually becomes noisy. The cam on my own car i run about in is worn, obviously its covered 114k miles, so its always going to be, i can hear the wear with the engine running, but no one else agrees with me that its noisy, but admittedly it is quiet compared to most ive heard, but IT IS worn and IT IS noisy...........so that falls down to peoples personal opinions and/or possibly a lack of experience.

Yeah , but you also get noisey setups that aren't worn.

So given that a hydraulic follower eliminates clearance in the valve train how do you have a non worn set up thats noisey

i thought a worn cam could be indicated by a vvery linear power delivery to,

as in it comes on boost but you get no certain 'kick, or there late to come on boost as valves dont open fully?

Well yea seeing as i originally said about there being a small tolerance for wear before they get noisey

if we wanted to go down that route we could start bringing the rockers and allsorts into the equation aswell

There can be numberous reasons for linear power, but cam could be one.
