Default suspect fuel pump

Help
i have a problem with my s2 rst, it broke down the other day, just wouldnt start, i called the AA out, he checked for spark which there was, he then checked the fuel relay which shows signs of melting around one of the pins,
the fuse in th fusebox also looks melted, he measured the the voltage at the fuel pump and said it was drawing around 6 amps which is too high as it should be around 4 amps, is this correct. the fuel pump relay was changed about 6months ago, now the car runs but will just switch off whenever it feels like and wont start, if i leave it for ages it will start
is there anything i can check or do or is it definantly the fuel pump

thanks for the reply

Just an update had someone look at the car today and i have been told that its the distribution board in the fuse box, we measured the voltage at the fuel pump relay wich was low (4), what we did was borrow another live and it started up, and the fuel relay melting was probably cused by the voltage drop, im not really clued up with electrics, how should i go about sorting this, i have been advised to get an auto electrician to have a look,, i do have a spare fuse box in my garage, how big a job is it to replace, or can it be repaired, what sort of money should i be paying an electrician

an auto elec is 50 plus pound for call out then anything plus the problem you had i had. if you know what wire it is you can run a wire from the bsat to the dead wire and it should run fine not sure about the fuse box though buddy. as for the fuel relay it wouldnt melt if it was a volt drop lift your fuse box out and check the seal i re3ckon its been leaking and thats shorted out the relay. let me know how you get on mate

just a quick update

was having a mess around today, on the fuel pump relay if i bridge pin 15
and 30 the pump runs, without bridging it theres nothing, cant hear the fuel pump priming, im gona try another relay see if that makes any difference.

i could run another wire from the battery, but the AA guy that had a look advised against this, something to do with if i have a crash the fuel pump wouldnt cut off.

Thanks
