Default how do i know if i have a lsd gearbox

thanks for looking i have a xr3i with a rs turbo engine in it. the gear box in it has yollow writing on it so it,s come from a scrap yard at some point.
Is there any way of knowing if it,s just a standard xr3i or a lsd gear box with out taking the box off. if i do have to to take the box off ( HOPEFULLY NOT) what do i look for.
thanks again

Put the gear in neutral and jack one front wheel up from ground. Now try to spin by hand the wheel as fast as possible. If you can get it to spin a round in less than 4 seconds, then you don't have an LSD.

Im sure you gotta have it in gear.

jack one wheel off the ground and select first gear, wheel in the air shouldnt turn much at all before the diff locks.

that works for my car and is how I got told to check it.

other option is to do a burnout and see if both wheels leave a black line

But that way you won't be able to turn the wheel because you'd have to turnover the engine aswell. Neutral sounds right to me.

jack both front wheels up in the air and turn one of the wheels one way,the other one should then go the same way

I think it should go the same way. You shouldn't be able to turn one wheel forward and one wheel backwards at the same time if you have an LSD.

Another way I can think of testing: Thrash it through a nice and narrow 90 degree corner. If it doesn't understeer into a lamp post, tree, wall, etc. you'll most likely have an LSD fitted...

No no no, you all make this too complicated and unreliable. It's so simple to jack one wheel up in neutral and just "feel" the tyre turning. With no LSD it will spin at whatever speed you spin it with. With LSD the wheel has much resistance and no matter how much force you use to turn it, it just turns very slowly in a sticky way.

Well, it's twice the work and with no LSD they can also go the same way.

always a good idea to have a spare gearbox, if your mates got a cheep one id grab his arm off. s2 turbos are prone to eating gearboxes!!

Do what JesseT said!

To check whether the one you're about to buy is fitted with an LSD just look through the hole where the driveshafts go. If you can see straight through it it's got an LSD. If there is a bolt in the way it hasn't...

Cheers mate that sounds like the easiest way to find out. I have to put a new driveshaft in coz the one shaft has snaped. I may as well rip the other side out to have a look. top advise
thanks

I guess you won't need to take the other one out aswell.
