And remember, idle is around 700rpm, not 1000 rpm or so.

Just checked, and 850rpm is what Ford states. Anyhow, at 1000+ a timing error is made very easily. This and the map hose not removed are the two most common timing faults both resulting in too little advance and poor performance. You will be amazed how many of the RSTs I have tuned actually have way too little advance even though the owner says that he has just set it to 12.

Also,

i think ford quote slighty less rpm on a S1 than a S2, think its 50 rpm less..

I doubt it will never advance the timing beyond the map value. It's just to retard it in the case of knock.

As jess said,

the knock sensor on a RST will only retard if it picks up det, and will never advance till det.

ok. I will go tommorow set ignition on 850 rpm with map hose dissconected. because I never checked ignition timing. and I am sure that mechanics in my country doesnt know that map hose must be dissconected (and hole on plenum blocked?) and doing all on 850 rpm.

Because otherwise the ecu will advance the timing and the 12deg is specified with the hose removed. Simple as that. Failing to remove the hose when setting the advance to 12deg means you're some 6 degrees of and ~15% short in hp.

Different ECU's have different advance curves too. A more accurate way is to apply pressure to the ECU map sensor, and set to 14 degrees at 4000rpm. I do neither, and tune it by ear on the road.

Yes best block it, so theres no vacum leak, use a small bolt.
