Default Overheating after Intercooler fit. Few questions!!

Hello folks,

Muppet time - i have fitted my intercooler and fans on the front of the intercooler, let it stand to see if the fans cut in - they did, i then could not decide which way the fans should be blowing - i tried them both ways, one way gave loads of hot air out of the back and the other had a slight breeze out of it!

1, which of the two ways is the correct for the fans??

After this i wanted to change the thermostat to an 82 degrees one but couldn't find where the thermostat was (stupid).

2, Does any one have any pics of the thermostat location please??

Because i left the car on for a good hour or so - it got hot, the fans were working - when i turned it off loads of water leaked out of the back of the engine - culdn't see where it was coming from because of the engine being in the way - it leaked onto the cat. (Couldn't feel for it or stick my head under the car because of the water being hot)!

3, Does any body know if there is a hose on the back of this, or do you think i have bust a gasket??

Cheers people any help is much appreciated,

Dumpy

If the fan is on the front it should be set to blow (via polarity wiring) so any air is blown through the rad. Conversely, if the fan is on the back of a rad it should be sucking air through.

As dragsteer said, the thermostat is on the right side of the block. It is a small brass item with a single wire plug that has an end like a plug lead (dizzy cap end) which pushes onto the thermo. The thermo is screwed in. Don't forget to check for leaks after you replace it.

As for the leak, there are no water hose connections into the engine that end. There are however water hoses that go around the back close to the engine so it could be one of these leaking, making you think it is coming from the engine. Is it a proper RST or a conversion as you mentioned a cat? RST's don't have a cat.

First things first, do you mean thermostat, the thing that controls water flow into the radiator, or the fan switch, the thing that controls when the raditator fan cuts in?

The thermostat is in the thermostat housing which bolts to the right hand side of the engine in front of the distributor, the part where the ignition leads come from, it is bolted on with three bolts two at each bottom corner and one in the middle at the top. Be careful when removing these bolts as if they have never been removed it is likely you may shear one off undoing them. Once you have removed the thermostat housing look inside, the thermostat is the part held in with a metal spring clip. Remove the spring clip, carefully as the alloy material of the thermostat housing can damage easily if your ignorant and use brute force! When renewing the thermstat renew the rubber gasket upon which it sits as these tend to perish. Once you have replaced the thermostat make sure you clean up the head and thermostat faces of the old paper gasket otherwise it will leak when you refit it having not done this and obviously use a new paper gasket.

The fan switch is located on the side of the thermostat housing and has as stated above a blue multiplug going to it. Remove the plug and undo, and as the Haynes commonly said refitting is reversal of removal.

The thing that controls when the fans cut in - but the thing that controls the water flow into the radiator would also be handy to know where it is so i can make sure that this is operating correctly!!

It's a conversion from an xr3i - but i have a magnex 4 inch pipe from the manifold back - there is a cat there - well weaved metal that looks a lot like a cat!!

Did they do a haynes manual for the RS, as i have looked for one but couldn't find one??

Cheers for all your help!!

That's a flexi-joint to allow for any slight movement in the exhaust without breaking any welds.

A pic for you.

In that pic, the water thermostat housing number 1.
This has the thermostat inside and will look like this. New ones are around £4/5 I think, plus you will need a new gasket (50p-ish). This opens at a set temperature to allow the water to flow through the rad to cool it.

Number 4 in the pic is the block thermostat: the thin brown wire. This iirc only gives a reading to your temp gauge on the dash. My S2 gauge didn't register properly but the fans worked ok, so I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fans as such: purely a gauge read-out.

As for making the fan cut in earlier, I've been told before that a Cossie fan switch cuts in at an earlier temp than an RS one (not sure where in the system it fits tho). Personally i'd fit an in-car fan switch so you can control when you want it on & over-ride the automatic system whenever you feel you want the fan on early.

There is no 2 or 3 on the pic btw, but it was easier to line-write a 4 than a curvy 2 or 3
