Default Series 1... worth a look/buying??

You might remeber a couple of months ago i came across an E plate Series 2 up for grabs for around £500 ( https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...&highlight=56k ) that had been stored in a shitty old garage for the past 5 year, well i have'nt bought it. Still interested in it but i've also come across this Series 1 which as been at a local garage now for the past 18 months.

It went in for the metering unit to be replaced and never left . So i got the owners number and checked it out, its had 3 owners from new, first was a woman who had it stolen , then a bloke bought it off the insurance company and ran it for a few years before the present owner Tony bought it to restore. He's had it over ten years and never even driven it . Turns out he's got a VW camper instead to restore so wants to get rid. I asked how much he wanted for it over the phone and he's after £3000 ( he's just looked at what the average sereis 1's fetching), said i'd call up and check it over and get back to him.

So today i took a drive and had a look round it, ALL the arches are solid, there totally free from thick rust, just smooth and flat on the lips where the kits rivited - mint considering. Battery trays mint, inner wings are good too. The bad points are where the vin numbershould be is rusted with a hole the size of 2p coin next to it. (possibly been tampered with when stolen) The roofs got a tiny pin prick of rust, and i mean tiny, around the fuse box has started to rust, tiny hole showing. The sills look solid, except for the hole near the vin number. Its had a sill repaired which looks a decent job. The interiors shabby, no boot carpet or parecel shelf, the drivers seats not good, dash usual cracks. But to be honest the bodywork seems pretty solid overhall and would make a decent resto project or just a tidy up, sort the engine out and run it as it is. I don't think its worth anyway near £3000 tho when its stolen recovered with no number, the mileage is 113,000 and its a non runner which needs a good tidying inside and a very small amount on the outside.

What do you lot reckon its worth???

This the worst 1 of 2 spots of rust on the roof, its pin prick tiny.

From the look of the pictures ive seen far worse. Id probably start around the £2k mark and see how he likes that. As weve all seen £5k gets you an absolutely original spanker like Dans one.........

would say 1200-1500 tops..... non runner, stolen recovered, doent look too great either any repair on a s1 is expensive on unique parts.

want you head looking at if you pay much more then that.

I'm with rswoza, I wouldn't give anymore than £1500

It's certainly not worth £2k.

Car looks as though it needs a right good scrub clean inside. Also with that mileage and the fact it's been stood you're likely looking at a bit of engine work needing done as well.

I'd offer £1200 first with the intention of going to £1500 max

Has it had a replcement tailgate as looks like no rear wiper on it.

Cheers lads, me and a bloke at the garage where its stood said £1500-£2000 for it as it stands.... The owner probably won't want to let it go at that but i think thats its money... He's just looked in the back of a mag and seen what crazy money some series 1's are going for and named his price.

What effect does it have on the car if the chassis vin numbers rusted away? I'd have too weld in a new plate but then the shell has no stamp. Does'nt look like its been tampered with, theres a hole next to it and the rest of the vin numbers just gone with the rust. Otherwise cleaning it up and replacing the interior parts should'nt be a problem, already got a loft and garage full of series 1 bits spare from mine i'm restoring now. Just thought if i could get it at the right price it might be worth having.

Vroooom Ptsssh - i'll get the reg for you mate

MikeyXr2i Is that the orignal stereo? thought they were diffrent to that.

Rosco I'll let you know pal on this s1 and the s2 in the link above if i don't bother with them. Both have real potential but the series 1 needs alot less work on the bodywork which is why i'm more interested, i already have a series 1 which needs some shell restoration, panels already bought so the series 2 would be something i personally could do without other than breaking it which i don't like to see if someones willing to put the work in to get it back on the road. Too many being broke.

Yup that is the standard one S1's were fitted with when New, You could have payed at the time for the optional Upgrade which was the Digital ECU1.

Alright then whatever u say

Im presuming your car has had no expense spared throughout its past, the original purchaser obviously had buckets of cash to have options like that fitted Rear selt belts were an option back then and were about £105+ VAT IIRC

I would say 1500 for that S1.

As you say the owner has just looked at the average price, but they will be runners, with test and ticket and HPi clear.

Did you say 113k mileage? so it isn't a lower miler and not rust free, you will no doubt find more rust if you brought it and got all the carpets out etc.

I would make an offer and leave your number with the bloke.

He would get 2k on ebay I would imagine, but those chassis numbers would make me run a mile if I won the bidding, and if he mentions it in the ad then it will put many people off.

No one wants their car rubbished, but if you just politely explain your offer and that at that money you are willing to take a risk and for him to keep you in mind, you may just get the call.

Do you think it will clean up ok ?? There's a few bits that could be worth checking first: make sure any mucky spots inside and out are just that: muck. Otherwise you will end up replacing them if you're after a good motor. Pics aren't brilliant, but inner wings look ok: only bit that concerns me there is where the bonnet rubber sits..but might be muck(?)
Check the vin number you can see with the log book and make sure they match. If it's holed I think 99% it's a mot failure. You can then repalce that section with DVLA approval and get the floor stamped properly by them.

Let us know how it goes..and don't forget the reg please

You got yourself a deal Mr

Being perfectly honest, i have no clue. I put a standard SRT32P on eBay, complete with about 2 foot of wiring and that solf for about £30 i think it was, it was someone off here who won it. He only bought it for the wiring though, the special plugs on the ends are the rarest part.

Probably not a fortune but should make a nice few quid (if it works anyway)

Matts1 - as you say mate.. don't want to rubbish his car but will point out the faults/probs and offer him what i think its worth £1500. Leave it with him but i know the garage are wanting him to get it out of their way. So itr could work to my benifit

rshawn - i'll try and get the reg for you fella, whatever i decide, might be best to get it before i try and knock him down to half his asking

Where and how much is it to have your chassis restamped, did'nt know you could do it to be honest.

Safechav - I bought that lead off you pal, can't remember how much for tho.

Go through DVLA which is as far as I know the only genuine way to re-stamp shells with genuine numbers and I think it's free.

I'd get on the blower or email then with the query and find out for definate first before doing anything tho.

I emailed DVLA and here is the answer I got:

Thank you for your email.

Your friend should firstly contact his local dealership to see whether they would be in a position to help him.
But if they cannot provide a new floor chassis plate for him he would then need to contact his local DVLA office. Details relating to our local office net work can be found on our Web Site. Please see below for details.
The staff at the local office would explain to your friend what he would need to do in these circumstances.

I hope that this information has clarified matters for you.
Regards
David S Evans
www.direct.gov.uk/motoring
I think he means a VIN plate and not a floor panel as we know it.

Here's the link to the offices if you want to follow that route: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Dire...ts/DG_10012974

Not if the original chassis number is still there. That only happens when all distinguishing marks are removed and the vehicle is unidentifiable.
