knocking on a fresh engine
this has been getting at me for a while but in my shed i have an engine i removed from my old rst as it had low oil pressure at tickover and was knocking.
when i dismantled the engine the crank and shells were unmarked yet with the crank bolted in place you can still move it up and down
is this due to the wrong size bearings being used when the crank was fitted?
everything else on the engine was brand new
the engine had only done a couple hundred miles and i still have the reciept for it,was from a company named rogersports

Jesus this is basic stuff, cannot beleive a garage can get it this wrong!!
If you can even feel any movement when tightened up(caps) they are indeed wrong shells for the crank which has presumably been reground ?
I always check turning torque required before I even pot the rest together and there is absolutely no excuse for this kind of workmanship at all.
I would meausre journal sizes, big ends and mains and then look up to see what it should be then check shell sizes.
I can only assume you have either an undersize(reground) crank or the wrong shells for the car.
Frankly I would do the job yourself than trust people that can't even put correct shells in.
tabetha
ps a teeny weeny bit of endfloat is normal, but only teeny weeny bit

you need to also make sure the block has not been oversized something that ford done to stop scrap blocks
mine was a bas~#*d to get the correct bearings as i needed 0.40mm oversize and 0.25mm undersize

Best take engine to decent machine shop, thye will accurately measure the clearance, an check for ovalty, line bore is ok etc.
They will also be able to supply the bearings as a lot of bearings are interchageable with just a bit of filing on tabs etc others can be made to fit from other makes of car boatplane jcb etc, you get the picture.

Roger sports were proper dodgy, I drove all the way to derbyshire in the middle of knowhere to be told that my engine and turbo where F^&KED ............??? what sort of an anwser is that, so turned out that the turbo air intake pipe was colapsing on boost, (this was back in 1999 when I was quite new to the joys of RS turbos!) what a bunch of monkeys!!
and how you can not spot that sort of movment on a crank...I do not know!!
