Default turbo systems ecu

I've recently purchased a second hand ecu told it was a turbo systems 185bhp chip. I opened it up and found writing inside the cover
Turbo systems
Date 1996
185 bhp
also on the main chip the metal cover says
PEST1Turbo systems
when you remove the metal cover cover it is a normal motorola chip with no stickers there is no sign of it being resoldered.
Could i have bought a standard ecu or does turbo systems reprogram the normal chip.
I'm in Fraserburgh North East of Scotland any of you turbo owners up here willing to check this ecu out for me. I would do it myself but my engine is in bits getting rebuilt for my cabriolet project

Looks like you've been sold a standard ECU mate i dont think you can reprogram the standard chip because the software is locked on them but im not 100% on that tho

same size but no sticker and it's a motorola chip. Been in touch with seller and he's adamant it's chipped but i'm not so sure. I'll get pics up when i dig out the camera.

Checked it against my standard 1 and the chips are nearly identical apart from 1 or 2 numbers. I think i've been sold a standard ecu.

He says he bought it off a mechanic friend for his project. He never had it running lost interest and sold off parts. Because this guy is a mechanic he thinks he can't be wrong. I've tinkered most off my days and i've been wrong before and how easy is it for somebody to pick up a pen and write things on an ecu. I'll only believe it's chipped when i see it running more than standard boost. It could be a month or 2 before my own car is up and running to try it out.

If the chip in it is a re-flashable Eeprom it will have a small round window on the top.

Some chips are removed and have a chip holder soldered in, some are resoldered, and to be honest something like this needs to have some high quality soldering done, which most them are so its not very easy to tell if its been changed or not.

Howdy people...

The RS turbo does NOT HAVE AN EEPROM! Which is why it cannot be live mapped (emulated). The data is stored in the Motorolla processor itself (embedded code).

Turbosytems are one of VERY few people who can reprogram the original chip. THe hardware to do it is very difficult to get hold of (Stag programmer....), and requires much knowledge.

Turboloon it's the boy i bought ecu off that has the mechanic friend. My ecu is heart and diamond as well. I bought this ecu from aberdeen and only have the guys phone number if it turns out to be a standard ecu he's agreed to give me my money back. Turboloon where about are you, we can arrange to meet to try this ecu out to see if it is chipped. My mates old turbo was up to Ricky Gaulds a few years ago now and he done wonders with it it was running like a bag of nails after a new engine and turbo were fitted driving home we had a grin from ear to ear.
Thanks

All S2's apart from some very early ones have a knock sensor. Hearts and diamonds won't work without a knock sensor, but you will probably have one (green plug on the right of the inlet manifold).

If the car can run more than 10psi of boost in the higher gears - the car is chipped...

i wrote '400 bhp cossie chip' in black marker on the back of a std ecu for a laff then gave it away to a mate as he needed 1 sharpish, 3 months later some1 tryed to sell it to me as a super duper chipped ecu

all ecu's programmed by us will be identified as above
the processors are also changed to a 40 eprom as apposed to the standard rom ,the processor is also labeled with the device stratorgy all labels are properly printed labels with the turbosystems motif for authenticity.

i changed my ecu from a hearts and diamonds chipped to a red blue red chipped ecu cause the knock sensor in the ecu was faulty and kept retarding the timing (well annoying) now its alll good!!!
