As above, anyone who knows, I'd gratefully appreciate their knowledge.

That'd explain why my S1 has been running like a bucket of cack since I've owned it then.

Hopefully the chipped Blue - Red - Blue ECU I now have will prove to be slightly better.

The ECU's are basically the same, if you connect a knock sensor to the current ECU you run, there should be no difference!

Remember if you change ECU it will need re-mapping though.......

the escort ECU's with knock sensor control are problem ones and definatly better off with the proper blue-red-blue ECU

there was quite a bit of difference when i changed from a chipped blue-red-black

You have to be very careful about this diagnosis. There's a very 'powerful' emporium just west of London who (some might say) developed a fairly uncanny 'knack' of making just such a diagnosis of this to justify a 'we can fix it but we'll have to put one of our chips in it /Ł175 pounds to you Sir approach'. Students of Fast Ford magazine will remember that they also trotted out that one to the journalist that took FF's project S2 there Last year.
If anyone does own an S2 and their tuner offers to 'rectify a fault' using the above old chestnut, at the very least get a second opion/ideally go and see
Jamie at Jamsport.

And as Andy says above there should be no difference in running an S2 ecu in a S1 as long as you've got a knock sensor connected.
