Gearbox's
Never really looked into them. Has anyone rebuilt one/freshened it up using rebuild kits?
Where do they normally go? What bit break's?
Rick.

What a question.... I could write a book on the subject. The short version:
Rebuilld kits have new bearings and baulk rings and the necessary gaskets to put it back together. However there's a ton of other parts that often are badly worn and should be looked at. Then there are a few weak spots like the main shaft roller bearing that would be better upgraded.
If there's something specific just ask.

My box is original, and after 7 years of owning the car and a fair bit of power, ive recently noticed it is making a slight noise on idle. Dissapears when you depress the clutch. Just thinking what my options are really. Do you know what the people that uprate the box's actually do to them, apart from shot peening the gears?

Don't really believe shot peening helps with such hard steels. Seems a bit of waste of time to me. The basic tricks with BC gearboxes are the fittment of IB5 mainshaft roller bearing (needs minor machining of the casing), the removal of the oil feed trumpet and shimming tighter the diff bearings. Also casings have small differences varying from model to model. On the same go, the final drive ratio can be changed. Also the LSD-diff itself is becoming a weak link with high torque engine variants. Not really making the box any tougher, but the gearchange mechanics often need attention as they tend to wear bad quite early.
The noise you're experiencing is most probably down to old layshaft bearings, old clutch thrust bearing or lack of gearbox oil.

There is an issue with my release bearing, which i need to attend to. Hopefully will be that, as otherwise the box is lovely. Not low an oil leak as she's dry
