Default New to this RS Turbo lark

Just want to get the ground rules in place just bourght a 90 spec with a recentfull de-rust and re-spray and 190bhp.

So... I use the car (or will use it) all year round as my only car, my driving will be a mixture of slow following other cars, with a good ragging now and then when I'm playing. Depending what time I start work, this ragging can get more often!

So what oil should I use and how often change it with the filter.

I presume its optimax only.

After a long run, you have to leave it running at tickover for a few mins to cool the turbo, yes? how long arunshould I be doing this, the 8 mie commute?

Cambelt, how often as thisone has done 100k, should I use the genuine ford kit, orare there other kits. I'll probably do itmyself,I have plenty of mechanicmates to callonifIneed them.

Anything else I really need to know?

I know they are really stupid questions, but might save me some blushes.

How do matey, welcome to the wallet black hole

Idle the car for around 3mins to be honest, i always drive off boost at around just above 2k for the last 5 or so mins of my journey as well.

If you can get it to a tuner now for a setup, this'll alert you to any potential probs and will point you in the right direction with it.

Fully synthetic 15/50w oil and the key to looking after a cvh turbo is regular oil changes.

Always super unleaded mate, never boot it with regular (just incase you cant get anywhere with super)

And expect things to wear out/break and keep on top of them.

Get a fucking good alarm

if you can change the brake fluid and get some braided hoses for it too.

thats some basics for starters anyway

I would reocmmend underseal to keep it rust free, and some waxoyl in kay areas. If you dont know when the timing belt was done last change it for peice of mind. If you think i was done no so long ago and your feeling tight just do the belt and check for play in the tensioner. It u dont know when it was serviced last. Give it a service also. Oil and filter changes are every 3000 miles. parts are cheap but i use motorist discount centre and get crap ones but change them every 6 months. Others wouldnt touch MDC stuff.

Post some pics if u get time, there always welcomed here.

If it's a nice one mate, get a £500 shitter as an everyday hack and 3rd partry insurance. Bear in mind these cars are at least 16 years old now and they don't like the winter and salty roads..............

Oil change every 3000 miles, cambelt every 2 years of 20k whatever comes first, waxoyl the underside and arches.

Cant really afford to insure this and a shitter, so its all year round for me and the RST, am I going to regret that? I only do about 10k a year, only an 8mile each way commute.

Found out a bit more about the spec...

189bhp
Pace intercooler
hybrid turbo (dunno what)
3.5" bore magnex, (will have to swap for something quieter far too loud)
silly dump valve (have to get rid)

MSD are in blackpool, thats a nice run, not too far, I will take it to them for a tune up and a chat about what needs doing, I'm buying off a friend who is a mechanic so he is going to service it fully before i have it, but he does not know when the cambelt was done last, but it has had a recent re-spray , its got a cat1 and is de-locked so security is ok.

Have to do the cambelt, presume its not to hard on these, will get my dad and mechanic mate to help.

Just need to get it waxoyled/undersealed, any idea where (northwest/cheshire) I can take it to get this done andhowmuch, or is it axel standsandget crawling? if so, any tips?

Yeah, ditch the dump valve. The larger bore exhaust systems are usually quieter than the smaller ones! If you want it quieter, get an additional silencer stuck in the existing system.. well, it's one option..

Those small pace intercoolers don't do much good.. but should be okay for a stage 1 car..

The cam is probably shagged.. probably worth replacing with a Kent CVH34 at your earliest convenience..

How will I know if the cam is stock? will it rattle if its knackered?is the cvh34 the one to go for? might be worth asking MSD when I'm there, I'm sure they will have some advice or should I put it in before setup?.

I have some money to spend on it. Getting 5-6k for my corsa diesel hopefuly and geting this at a bargain £1500 (he will give it to me for what it owes him).
So help with a shopping list, options and rough prices, and where from would be nice.

This is what Ive got onvmy list.

Quieter exhaust
B&M quickshifter ( I like a nice shift!)
Radiator (he says the current one leaks a little, not alot).
Kent Cam probably
Nice big front mount IC?
Dyno tune at MSD
Underseal/waxoyl (I have no Idea who to get to do this)
Cambelt kit. (I willdo it with my mechanic mate)

anything else?...

hi mate get some waxoyl and your ass under the car, this is RST terriorty now. You gotta do alot of s*it yourself unless your loaded. If i had a mechanic mate, i would be bribing him with weed and bear everyday.

PS If any mechanics want weed, beer and prosies. Let me know im in berkshire alternatively u could accpet cash.

B&M quickshift is the exact opposite of what you want if you like a nice shift..

I'd go for a couple of 2wd cossie intercoolers with new end tanks as a nice and cheap intercooler.. alternatively spend £300+ on some other stuff.. pro alloy is better than grs for fitment..

Hey m8.. Welcome to the erst scene

my advice...

Forget abouth the quickshift for the time beeing, better to keep that money for a good gearbox.
Unless it's a fearly new one, it's gonne shit itself sooner then l8ter, if that happens get yourself a nice bernie box you will be far better off with a good box then a quikshift.

Also one of the first thing's to do is check all your brakes ( disk's, calipers, hoses ) and replace/uprate if needed.

Also check all your suspension bushes and engine mounts.
and check the other bit's of your suspension ( Shocks, springs )

Replace the broken radiator and check ALL the hoses.

Don't go out and spend all your money on fancy new things, better to keep some money behind.

trust me.. things will brake down..

It's beter to first drive the car for a few mounts and replace things when they show.

i made the same mistake when i first got mine, spend all my money on bit's and pieces i did't realy need and when thing's realy started to go wrong i ran out of fundings
You will thank me l8ter

ok sounds good, go for 4 new tyres and a good set up for now then, and a radiator!
Its got samco hoses, koni suspension (dont know about bushes will check them, and the engine mounts. Will probably change the exhaust ans sell this one as I dont like the look or the sound.

Recommendations for a good exhaust that wont do my head in (or make my ears ring on the motorway) and where I can get it from would be appreciated.

Oh and I'll get under it with some waxoyl and a wire brush!

anything else?

I think only the standard exhaust is quiet

Every RST exhaust i've heard gives you the lovely burble.. Scorpian, Mongoose, Magnex.. I'd say Magnex is the quietest out the bunch..

Im not looking for quiet, want a nice burble, just dont want a headache after driving it for ten minutes! and that motorway drone is terrible. dont like the big 4" barrell either its sticks right out of the bumper, a 3.5 flush with the bumper would do me fine!

The quietest and best looking is the Power Engineering system Click the link on my sig and have a gander at mine. Don't think they're made anymore so will be a 2nd hand one mate. But they are THE best.
