need to take the cowling off the steering column. check all the wires to see that they arent broke or lose and making contact with another connection

i have no idea mate, but while the plastics are off, you will get a better look at where smoke is coming from.

could it be the ignition switch!

could be anything mate. in all my years of owning fords ive never had this problem. if a wire somewhere is sparking of something enough for there to be smoke, then it will be perfectly obvious when its uncovered. the only thing is, that surely a fuse would go. so is there a hard wired slot in the fuse box because somebody got fed up changing fuses?
only way to find out is to get in and have a look.
