possible the thermostat is stuck open, or theres not one in there at all making it much longer to warm up, fan won't come on if nothings getting hot.

you dont say if it is running at normal temperature or lower.
first off bridge the fan switch by linking out the two cables connected to the switch, if the fans work this needs replacing.
the heater problem may be due to a clogged up matrix!!

Don't ask - I don't know

I'd flush the system first and change the thermostat if you run one. I don't personally, but I only use my S1 in the summer anyway. May find the heater matrix is blocked. You can stick a hose down it and that may clear it, but they have a habit of bursting if you do that and then end up with a puddle inside the car..............so be warned !!!

the matrix is in the heater box,to flush it out run water through it. to find it follow your water pipes to the bulk head, you will see to connectors, they are the in and out, carfull though the do burst!!

stusfesta: I'd get yourself a new thermostat first off, notoriously shit on all CVH engines (fairplay they did make a pigs ear of designing CVH didn't they )
My one came from halfords, cost about £4, and my car runs amazingly cool, heaters are roasting, drive along at 10 miles per hour and the temp needle sits right down, obviously in traffic it does get hot and the fan cuts in, but it is excellent IMO, warms up quickly too (again notoriously crap for warm up times)
If your fan isn't cutting in even when its left at stand still its going to be the thermostat. If you turn the heaters on when its stationary i bet the heaters go cold in a matter of seconds yeah? And no heat when driving?

If the fan switch was gone when left it would get hot, the needle would go up into the read and it would boil over and piss all the coolant out the overflow pipe.
Whats the temperature needle reading?

well theres on simple way to test the switch then, let the thing idle, and get hot, obviously you need to be ready to whip the fan switch off and bridge the terminals for if/when it boils. The fan should always cut in just before the car boils over, if the car starts to let coolant out the overflow get the fan running, and it would be safe to say the fan switch is fucked.

Ok sounds like a good move, sounds lik you also need a matrix if thats the case though? Check to see if both the pipes to and from are as hot as each other?
