anyone ever modded there fuel tank???
been thinking recently about all these questions about fuel pumps stalling and not working correct. got me thinking has anyone ever took out the std pump and blocked the pipes off then had a pipe welded into the bottom of the tank and ran a 044 to pump it into the boot to a swirl pot then to 1 or 2 044's depending on the setup then through the car into the bay!!
my question mainly is would it work????
i could be just sounding stupid but its something that i been thinking about
cheers Ad

Did this a long while ago to a mates big turbo (420bhp) that was suffering fuel surge when coming off roundabouts and the like (it would cut out then pick the fuel up and come back on with such force the car lurched sideways and it wrecked two gearboxes). Basically it consisted of:
Removed standard in tank pump and replaced it with an adapter that had a large bore pick up pipe and two smaller returns. The pick up fed a large low pressure lift pump (capable of pumpimng more fuel than the high pressure pump) that fed a swirl pot that sat in the boot. A take off from the swirl pot fed a high pressure Bosch pump that fed the fuel rail. The two returns were connected to the fuel rail return and the swirl pot return.
Worked a treat with no more surge problems. A couple of downsides though, one being the two pumps were mounted below the rear seats and were quite audible (but only when sat still or low rev driving) and the other being my mate liked his Aeroquip hosing and these never seem to seal enough to stop the smell of fuel from escaping the connections.
