Oil Separator?!
Can anyone tell me what these are used/needed for?? At what point of modifying do you think you need to fit one? Would I see any benefits by fitting one to my small turbo EsCos which has a mongoose s/s pipe, K&N induction kit, -31 actuator and an evolution chip supplied and fitted by MAD and said to be running at approx 280bhp! Any enlightening info on this subject will be gratefully received as to be honest I'm a little unsure at the mo Cheers gang

needed around 300bhp/higher boost levels, like TUNES; helps the engine breath more easily, reducing piston ring blow by and consumption of oil, needed on engines used hard. Standard breather barely does the job of seperating oil mist from the crankcase. Get an uprated one if you use your car hard, may not be needed in your case, you will know

I believe mine to be running about 18psi and it does seem to be using quite a bit of engine oil (Castrol RS 10W/60) so would you recommend I invest in one?

I think you will find most tuned cosworth engines either use 15W50 (most common) or 10W60. I don't think many use 5W40? - correct me if I am wrong?
I still have the original oil breather system, and I am running a stage 3. I need to upgrade though so does anyone have any suggestions / tips for fitting etc....? & makes to go for...?

The recommended oil for the Escort RS Cosworth is 5w-40 or 10w-40.
What this actually means is that this engine is happy on an oil that has a viscosity of 14cst at 100degC which is an sae 40 not an sae 60!
An sae 60 is in fact 24cst at 100degC which is a whopping 70%+ thicker than required. This is not a good thing so let's not be macho about it.
An oil that is too thick will cause additional friction, heat and engine wear added to which it will reduce your fuel consumption and BHP at the wheels!
An oil that is too thick can also cause cavitation in the pump!
Now, ok I accept that in extreme circumstances (Rod Tarrys Cosworth as an example) there may be an argument to use an sae 60 as the mods are extreme to say the least but on most of your cars it's causing more harm than good.
Mods that affect BHP and particularly oil temps may need a step up to an sae 50 (18.5cst at 100degC) but this is only applicable if your oil temps exceed 120 degC!! This will prevent the oil from thinning too much at these extreme temperatures and above.
Don't step up viscosity (oil thickness) unless it's totally necessary, step up the quality! A proper synthetic 5w-40 will handle 120degC an that's a fact.
Just concerned at the inapropriate use of 10w-60
Cheers

It's unbelievable how many different oils I have been recommended over the past few months The oil I am using at the moment (Castrol RS 10W/60) was recommended to me by the lads down at Carwise UK in York so you'd think they would know what they was on about, wouldn't you???

adamski frst - I am humbled! from what I understand when the oilman speaks he is right. I have always been recomended 15w50 fully synthetic -Motul or Mobile #1 motorsport grade.
I always thought millers was expensive so Dave is right I would not buy that because I am a tight cun't seriously though if millers 5w40 had serious advantages then I would consider the extra money next time.
Dave - cam cover is great, hopfully I will fit it this weekend and get a pic of it fitted up here somewhere - prehaps a before and after? - because I have a new turbo heat shield that needs fitting too!
Any suggestions though for upgrading to a group A oil breather?

lots of people will say different things but when ford themselves recommend 5w/50 and the oilman who deals in it says 5w/40, as does miller's and morris's oil i would recommend to go for what is supposed to be used

Dave - I work for Ford so the heat shield was only Ł60ish with discount, but thanks anyway - if you do think you have anything I may be interested in send me a PM with the list of bits!
M.A.D.RST I have a bailey header tank so I would only need the oil breather and fitting kit - so PM me a price.
Final question guys, is it important for me to get a good oil breather kit or will the standard system do for a stage 3?????
