the yellow / grey wire is the illulination for the boot popperswitch, 
it is live when the lights are on, so the electric window and boot popper switches light up in the dark. 
so it looks like your neon theory was right. 
the wire under the bonnet neer the battery went to the neons. no point having neons on in the day? 
all you ned to do now is put them back on.
