Default gearbox rebuild quote

hi all, just been on the phone to CTS to get a quote to do abit of work on my gearbox first gear is abit tricky to get when cold sometimes so rather than waitting for it to bust totally id like to get it sorted, does 300 pound sterling sound a fair price to have first gear renewed as the rest of the box is fine and dandy...

are they just doing that and nothing else.

if you are going to the trouble of taking it out, sending it off etc...then imo i would get it fully rebuilt, new syncros etc...which is probably the cause of your problem.

pm Marco Polo on here and he will get you some prices off Bara motorsport to do the work on your box.

Sounds steep enough if you have to take it out and re fit it yourself. As Dave said, Might aswell do the lot.

I think you "may" find that it is the clutch that is the problem NOT the gearbox. Basically the clutch cable stretches and the flywheel gets raised hot spots on it that means the clutch doesn't disengage properly, hence why it is difficult to select first gear. Get he flywheel surface ground and either fit a hydraulic clutch conversion or a manual clutch cable adjustment, and it should cure the problem. First gear isn't usually a problem as it is on the main input shaft with 4th gear, so is VERY strong.

funny you should say that mike when the gearbox came out there was a little nut at the end of the cable which was used as some kind of a spacer would this be there to give more clutch pedal...... the car has a ap 6 or 4 paddle set up in it didnt have time to take it off last nite to inspect, how much should i get ground off the flywheel ??

In that case, it is DEFINITELY the clutch!

Refit the spacer to stop the clutch dragging on the flywheel, or do it properly with either a hydraulic conversion (which will make the car a JOY to drive) or an adjustable ratchet:

You only need to grind off enough to remove the flats spots so that the flywheel is true .
