Default Car is snaking all over the road .... advice please. :-(

Hello fellow Cossie-lovers,

I have a '94 ST Escort Cosworth and love it..... however, it reacts EXTREMELY to the road. If the road is uneven it snakes and pulls the steering wheel.
Is this normal for a Cossie ? ....

The car is 100% standard except for powerflex bushes in the front anti-roll bar and top-mounts.

Advice and experiences would be very appreciated.

Cheers
Thomas

All i'd say is make sure your tracking and alignment is perfectly set up.

you havent bent anything underneath have you, small clump against the kerb etc, maybe lower arm bent slightly??

But NO, it shouldnt be like that!

Hi Kelv,

No ... don't think so.
Just changed my oil-pump for a new high-pressure and we had most of the front splitted.... nothing unusual.

Might change both sides (tie rod end) ... maybe it will help, but they didn't seem faulty.

I have a small theory....

The car was bought from a dealer who had it for a loooooong time... hence, the car has just been standing still for a long, long time and I haven't done anything to the wheels and tyres except driving the car.
Maybe this has effected the handling ? .....Can standing still for a long time affect the rims and tyres ?

Tyres can go a bit brittle and maybe suffer cracking or deterioration!

what tyres do you run the car on, i found when i first fitted Eagle F1's that the car did tend to wander a little and follow the road more!

I'm running Pirelli P-zero ... standard (original) Cossie spec tyres.

The car has, most likely stood still for 2-3 years before I bought it.

I don't think that my car has ever had the bushes renewed.... might be worth trying out.
Will change to PowerFlex and see what happens.

Will also get a fresh set of tyres tomorrow so maybe that will help a little too ..

My powersteering is fine.....

Your problem could also be the steering-wheel-axle-thingy ... don't know what this part is called exactly in English.
Mine did what you are experiencing...only worse and it turned out to be the above.
I paid 110Ł for a new one and it cured the problem.

It would be a very good idea to also change the inner and outer track control arm bushes to Powerflex ones, as the roll bar bushes being only changed will effect the standard ones, especially the outer TCA as the roll bar runs right throuth them.
This could have been caused by the car sitting around for a while and the bushes may have rotton away !!

Tires could have developed a flat spot too.
