Stiff Petrol Cap
After destroying 2 keys... lucky they are only £4-5 to replace, even the light ones. so cheap as chips..
but i have a seriously stiff barrel, so id imaging one of the springs have seized inside. Ford do a repair kit for the barrel so you can still keep your same key...
i need to know how to disasemble the barrel if anyone has had this problem before of knows how to do it.??

mine went the same, almost snapped the key trying to lock it one day.
i just dribbled some oil into the mechanism and around the back end of it, worked the key in after a while and it slowly became easier to turn, spent about half an hour repeating this and eventually it was as good as new.
not had a problem with it since, that was almost a year ago

as above, take cap off with the key still in it spray wd40 in the back of it then hold front of cap & twist back of cap back & forth keep spraying wd40 in it, will free up no problem

for a real long term solution what i used to do in the ford dealer was pump LM grease into the barrel and work the lock for 10 min or so continuasly putting grease in. its a common fault espesialy with fuel caps but its worth doing all the locks exept ign

dont oil it as it will attract grit and make it worse in the long run, in the past i have stripped the barrel down and cleaned and greased everything, you will have to prise/uncrimp the top off the barrel once its out, just remember where everyhing goes prob easier to just get another, lol

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
ive done the same.ive cleaned it first...and then oiled it..and mine is working smooth still..and NO grit attached to it either...just make shure to clean the outside..so its not oily on the outside.

When I bought mine it had a flexi cap from halfords fitted! When I got it home and cleaned it I found the orignal cap under the drivers seat.
I tried to fit it but it was incredibly stiff, all I did was take it apart and clean it and then grease it.
The whole thing comes apart easily, all you have to do is remove the circlip!

i have used wd40 at the back and inside the key part itself.... and still deters to be stiff as assholes..
I have also taken the surclip off and the back of the barrel doesnt to come off, do the barrel have to be in the locked or unlocked position to remove???

assuming it's the same as the sierra ones, you should be able to just wiggle it free once the circlip is out
if you are buying keys everytime, you might as well buy a new lock as well, if they start getting stiff (oooerr) they become almost impossible to turn due to either a small bit of grit finding it's way into the locking mechanism or the grease inside drying out and blocking it up
i'll see if i've got an old lock i can bust up to show you but it's a bit tricky to get pics of something so miniscule and have them show up the bits that are the problem

This brings back memories, i remember being very low on fuel so though i'd stop off at a petrol station to find my petrol cap was stiff, jiggled it about and managed to break the black tag off the key with the other part in cap, after eventually getting it out and thinking i could get home and sort it, then suddenly realising my steering lock was on and couldn't get enough leverage of the remainder of the key to get the lock off.
I felt a right plonker !!!!

Key and lock
If your lucky enough to have a locksmith in your town give it him. I have in my village and never been charged more than a fiver for a job like this.
Last one if I remember (long time ago)
Fully strips down lock
Cleans it all with wd40 or similar
Gets the tumblers and checks for scores or wear marks
Remove any groves or sharp areas that are'nt meant to be there.
Greases and reasembles
Like new.

Fords told me they do a reapir kit to save buying a new lock and having to have a different key for the new lock. So im going to order the repair kit and give it to me mates uncle the lock smith and should be good as new then..

Ford can supply a new barrel to your existing key for about £12, there being lazy if they make you get a new cap with different key.
My mate works for ford and he says that they usually palm off the caps they have on shelves as the new barrels are fiddly to do, new caps aren't painted either.

once you have taken the circlip off just bash the "nipple" on a hard surface, the barrel will pop out then do as above (I used soomething for trade use better than WD40) then will be as good as new
