Default High emissons, fault codes found....

Hello

I just had my MOT and it "failed" on the emissions!
Its a 1996 Cossie with no mods and not really showing any other symptoms.

I know what it could be, reading this post: https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...light=#2865457
but wondered if a rolling road help me pinpoint the problem?

cheers

Lee

HEGO, catalytic convertor could be the problems. Has it been chipped or modified in any way?

For a MOT test they wouldn't bother checking this. Have you had a code reader on the car? It's the best thing to do before you start looking into things further.

nah I havnt, basically it was one problem on a big list of problems I had been having lately, worst one being the car cutting out. The mechanic that does the work cant really spend loads of time looking for problems because he does private jobs at work (which hes not ment to do). The cutting out problem was sorted with some help on here as he wasnt sure what was causing it, and didnt have the time to look!

Thats basically why im asking if a rolling road would find out what would be causing the emissions.

If I could find out what was causing the emissions I could tell him and he then could sort it for me, just the finding the problem that is the problem, if you get what im saying!

Gotcha, in answer to your question, no, a rolling road session wouldn't be the way to go to find out about your emissions problem. I'd put a code reader on first (about a 10 - 15min job usually), most independant garages will have one suitable for eec-iv and the cost will be less than a rolling road session.

You need A 4 gas analyser, High CO does not necessary mean a knackerd cat. If the Enigine was running fine and the cat was knackard the co should still only be about 2.50% if the co is a lot higher than this it could be the map senor or coolant temp sensor or a dozen other things.

If the HC are high it normally indicates a misfire . If the lambda is out it could be a exhaust leak behind the cat.
As i said earler you need a print out and look at the readings and you can normally have an idear what the problem is by looking at them.

Cheers sailorbob, i`ll see if my mate could do a code reader.

and dave green, I didnt get the readout but both CO and HC were high, was told CO was very high, i`ll ask my mate if hes still got the readout, the car does actually drive fine and idles fine so dont think there are any symptoms to go on!

ok, got the report codes, one was 172 - HEGO shows system always lean, so thats the lambda fucked, the other was 538 - Operator error and the third one was either 327 - EVP circuit below minimum voltage or 337 - EVP circuit above maximum voltage. Was definately something to do with the EVP!

Anyone know what that fault means??

Error 172 most likely means that the HEGO sensor has had it but also check for air leaks in the exhaust before the sensor as this can cause it to read lean too.

Error 538 just means the tester didn't blip the throttle enough (or at all) for the system to do the goose test.

Errors 327 and 337 are caused by a bug in the ecu's code and you can only ignore them as the car has no EGR. What's the catch code of your ecu?

See this guide http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=17 It'll probably be COSY, CARD, ANTI, QUIK or TCA5.
