if its still using the standard hoses then its prob easiest to undo the banjo bolt under the car where it bolts to the p/steering pump, still be messy but at least you can slacken the bolt and have a container underneath to drain it slowly

Banjo bolt is on the pump, when you refill, turn lock to lock a few times to purge the system, you may want to drain it again then refill and purge

Right ... in this pic, you can see between the rad and crossmember, there is a lenght of black hose with metal unions each end its about a foot long and has that plastic curly stuff round it... at one end you can see it bolts to the P/S pump... that is the banjo bolt

OR

There is another solid metal hose to the left in the pic (In my pic its painted silver)which is fixed via a hose clip, IIRC this is the supply from the reservoir, so you could just get it all warmed up and thin, then drain here, refill, purge, warm up and drain again

I don't think it's for cooling. It's to protect the hoses not to be rubbed through.

Its for cooling, though doubles as a wear protector in some instances

Take a look at my pic for example... No other hoses resting on it at all...
