Default FAO DOG OWNERS

I was just wondering if you give your dog their boosters regularly or if you don't bother?

Storms due his today and is having it, but alot of people i have spoken to say they don't bother with boosters once the dog is over 2?

So now i dunno what to do lol

Also i've lost his medical card thing ... do i need it?

if you keep any pets you should treat them as part of your family cos thats what they deserve. they cant look after themselves and you the owner has the responsibility to look after them. if they need injections, they get them. if it was your child/bro/mum ect and the docs said they needed somthing you'd get it.

pets are no different, IMHO

so get the boosters!!!!

i work with dogs and to be honest the jabs are always kept upto date , think of the dog as a member of the family, would you let them not have a yearly jab to protect them??

In theory, you are correct, after the age of two then they don't need a booster every year as there immune system is now fully up and running. BUT if there is an outbreak, of say Parvo, in your area then you would need to get your dog done.
For the sake of twenty quid a year, its not worth the risk.

Have always kept our up to date.

Also, if your dog ever has to go into kennels, they won't accept any dog who isn't up to date with their vaccinations, including the 'kennel cough' one. A dog doesn't necessarily have to have been in kennels to catch this.

Kennel cough one used to be every 6 months, but now you can have an annual one.

The vet might not think it's necessary, but as I said above, boarding kennels will insist on a dog being fully vaccinated.

TBH, it's taken many years to eradicate many dogs catching Distemper and to a lesser extent Parvo, solely by more responsible owners having their dogs vaccinated. If people take the attitude that boosters are a waste of time, Distemper and Parvo could be endemic again.

Dogs who haven't been vaccinated can become carriers, even though they might not actually have the diseases themselves, is that fair?

sorry to disagree with that. the boosters guard against 5 viruses of which three only need boosting every third year but the other two need to be done every year i looked into this last year

Agreed, But should Vets not be telling people to keep going with them rather than stopping at 8 years old?

I have no idea about these things and just take the advice of a Pro.

Maybe the Vet was just making a casual observation of what he thought, but not actually advising you not to have have your dog vaccinated. I am a little surprised that he said that. My Vet isn't of that opinion.

It would also, I suppose, depend on what area you lived in, if you were right in the middle of nowhere as opposed to a busy town/city, the need to vaccinate wouldn't be so great.

Alfie's insurance is not valid if he doesn't have his boosters, but i would get them done anyway.

Better safe than sorry.

Totally agree with Redkop! Everyone should keep them upto date to help stop the spread of the Deisease etc. I mean look at the case with humans atm People are not getting MMR Jabs so Polio (sp) etc has come back and on the increase

For sake for £20 is it even worth worry about? I get my little cat done every year

Default hi

Hi

I agree, we do not have diseases as much nowdays as owners are vaccinated as said before. I have seen quite a few dogs with PARVO when I worked at the vets and nursed the poor little things, its not nice and ive seen many owners of these dogs sobbing their hearts out only to wish they had vaccinated, its not a very nice thing to witness and Distemper is even crueler so yes as its only 20 to 30 a year its worth it rather than facing the possibility of illness to your beloved pet.

we've always had our dogs done but never the cats and they've been fine? although saying that the cats don't go out.

didn't know a dog could die from licking anti-freeze though, thats well shocking as i've often left anti-freeze in the back of the car with the dogs, i didn't know it was that dangerous.
