Default Attn!!! **All peeps running cossie 4pots on mk3&4 Escort

Attn: Mr Rainbird, Adam other peeps that have a cossie brake set-up.

Ok guys, those of you that know what i am upto will know that i "WAS" in the process of fitting Sierra Cosworth 4pot callipers to my mk3 Escort Cabriolet. I drilled out the mounting holes on the hub and bolted them up with M12 bolts.

And fitted like this

I had the callipers temporally mounted in place and thought before it all went spirilling out of control i'd fit one of my rims i'm going to be using - a S1 15" 7 spoke Rs wheel.

I bolted it up and yep just as i thought it fouls the calliper quite badly, if the disc were on to it clear that no problemo its just that its fouling the rear of the wheel

So was i wrong to even start this fitting of cossie brakes, i've seen so many conflicting stories on here and crossed advice It seems the depth of the wheel isn't big enough to clear the calliper, which is a real shame - cos i fooking like these!

Is there anything i can do to remedy this or is it a fact of it they just aint going to fit? I was under the immpression that the cossie came with these behind 15" rims as standard??? But i have a feeling the cossie sat on deeper rims than what i have and thats how it cleared the callipers.

Looks like i'm going to have a set of callipers on ebay soon..............

Advice please lads and lasses,

Paul can you not get material machined off the calipers so the rims fit on over the brakes?

Nah if i were to get that done the callipers would foul the rear of the wheel even more!!

Its as if the calliper needs to be mounted further awy from the wheel.

I think i may just scrap the idea and get The Billet 4 Kit which consists of:

One Pair of Discs, Cross-drilled or Grooved
One Pair of Aluminium Mounting Bells
One Pair of HiSpec Billet 4
One Pair of Mounting Brackets
Hardware Pack

285/24mm Billet 4 Ł480.00+vat

Had said kit on my old Red S2, needed wheel spacers matey
No other alternative

Cossie 2wd have an offset of ET40 too, which makes a difference...plus the spokes aren't as wide
Your standard ones above are ET35 I think

how do you mean its hitting the rear of the wheel? the spokes? cossies came with a different offset so wheel spacers may be needed, have you tried it with the disc on? have you got the right amount of spacing on the caliper bolts? are u sure the caliper isnt fouling on the wheel balance weights?

dont you have the calipers the wrong way round? from what i heard the bleed nipples are usually round the bottom when you do the cossie conversion as ive heard people saying its a pain in the arse to bleed

James - Have you any idea what sized spacers you used?

weegaz22 - Yeah its fouling the rear of the spokes, as james said about the offset and as i suspected it maybe an offset thing. Not tried it with the discs on yet, cos i aint got'em Spacing on the calliper bolts?? Its defo not fouling the balencing weights and as for having the callipers upside down, i could well do mate - I'm still not 100% sure this is worth all thsi hassle

once the discs are on it should probably give you the clearance needed, the spacing was the amount of washers used to get the caliper correctly centred with the discs, think its 10mm or something, have a look at other threads as i may be getting confused with something else

I could of told you that them wheels aren't gonna clear the calipers

Wheel spacers or machining on the caliper is the only other thing to to

Or just get a set of 16"/17" wheels

Billy,
I fitted 4x4 front discs & 2wd 4 pots to my series one when i had it with no problams at all. I was also running on standard S1 wheels. The only thing i did use was a 2.5mm washer between the caliper & mounting point to centre the disc in the caliper. BTW, Your picture shows the caliper mounted on the wrong side of the mounting bracket. You need to move it to the outboard side (ie between the hub & strut, not on the back as you have it) Don't give up mate. You have bought the bits required! Where there is the will there is always a way.

Cheers for your replies chaps.

Adam seems to be the one thing i forgot to mention when asking before was the fact that i was on standard rims

James - I was working on the fact that the coz came wiv 15" rims, just never took the fact that the cos came with 205's on and not 195's Oh well we live and learn And as for 16's, no way!! 15's for me, wanna keep it sheep in wolf overcoat if ya see what i mean

Blakeya - I 'was' getting the correct bells and rotors off of Mr Rainbird so i had no need for washers and i tried mounting the wheel with the calliper where it is and there was still no clearence to fully bolt the rim up, if i put the calliper onto where you say i should would there not be even less clearence?

You'll get it to fit, you'll just need bigger bells

cossie came with 7 inch wide rim and a different offset.

The 2wd 4 pot is a big caliper and doesn't fit behind the wheels. I found this out.

just get some 16's they're cheap enough

Paul, as per Blakey, the calipers are mounted on the wrong side of the hub brackets but the bleed nipples are right way up.

Again as above, the discs will bring the wheel out too, just get the bells made a bit thicker, and then check your bolts are long enough.... If yours are et35 and a saff is et 40, thats 5mm extra clearence required... at least I would imagine

285/24mm Billet 4 Ł480.00 tis the biggest to go behind 15" rims.

So what you saying is, if the bells are 5mm thick i might be ok?

Nah if the bells are an extra 5mm over std .. you "may" be ok, ie instead of using 5 mm spacers ay

Havnt read all the posts mate but this is what u need to do , Have 5 mm removed from the caliper where it mounts to the hub .

his will allow the disk to fit ,

Then to use a S! rim u need 15 mm spacers . have had this issue with the track car , in the end i have used saph latice wheels , these are 15's but were designed with caliper clearence in mind .

As Lee has kindly pointed out, just because they are 15" rims, doesn't mean they are going to fit . Each wheel has different rim widths and / or offsets, as well as different clearances inside the wheel, so just because it is a 15" wheel, doesn't mean squat .

If it was MY S1, I would want to keep the original wheels, so my advice would be to do what Blakeya did - just use 4x4 discs....

Hello dude. We can have a good look at this on Sunday. Have you got the brake discs yet? As has been said, they will push your wheels further out. Don't panic, you have just been a bit premature with the trial fitting (Not the first time you have been associated with that word ) Until the disc are on you are not going to know what needs doing.

Never fear, I will bring my dremel and soldering iron We can get this to work!

Billy ,

Another option for you is a 2WD disc , mounting bracket ( conversion bracket High spec etc stock em) and use the standard caliper , ( or a slightly better S2 caliper )

This conversion will give u a nice big disc but will allow the fitment od standard wheels .
