Default EFI CVH (NASP) Cutting out when stopping

posting on behalf of ginge/b19bal...

when coming to a stop (braking etc) the revs will drop n the car will stall... when this happens/is happening you also get feck all servo assistance to the brakes = v. dodgy!!!

car also misfires a little bit at idle

has new plugs+leads (aparently)

checks done sofar (in petrol station ... lol) this probably means feck all

unplug map sensor multiplug... idle stays the same (no change in engine running)

unplug map sensor vac hose (blocking off with finger) noticeable change in engine running (ie i think the map sensor works)

the breather thingie on the top left of the engine was in v. loose n not sealing good so we put a hubilee clip on that now, however it makes zero difference if this is plugged in etc. (ie it will run fine with a huge leak here) but i asume thats coz its MAP based yeah?

any ideas for the orange haired one?

ps this is a mk4 cabriolet with a 1600 CVH EFI engine (ala XR2i)

also if you sit there at idle n let the clutch up so the rev drops quite low and then dip the clutch again, the revs will rise back up nicely, so i assume that means theres good vacuum there (no boost/vac gauge to check it against tho)

Is the ISCV leaking or even working..??? Might be worth cleaning it anyway, regardless, as it causes stalling / poor idle problems...
Does it do it more when it's cold..??

Is the coil pack plug on securely... ?? Have you got a good engine earth..??

servo seems fine checked that

didnt try playing with ISCV... possibly...

breathers not checked no...

also there was a cream coloured thing with a plug on it next to the coilpack, this has a single wire going to it... this wasnt particuarly secure... any idea what it is?

ok update from ginge... he broke down on the way home n had to get the AA out...

more symptoms

the car now wont idle at all unless you give it a bit of gas...

if you put it under load (ie nail it) it'll splutter n die

it STINKS of fuel

AA man suggested CPS... that sound likely?

the car was fine approx 100miles earlier

do you know the TPS output voltages/resistances by any chance so we can send him out later with a multimeter and check it?

Sounds nigh on exactly like the prob I had with mine, and turned out the rings were fucked, causing fook all compression to all bores

Stinks of fuel (gets past the rings into the oil and then pumped into the rocker area with the oil so you can smell it...

Revs dropping off when de-clutching and being generall eratic all other times. Often refusing to start or idle unless you force it to

Air box had oil in it ( )

So it's either his rings are bolloxed or the ISCV is total tits up

well lt me add a few things too it

car dont start at all as such, ya can keep it going if ya keep tickling the throttle, ya can drive it at all as it stalls, if ya do make i start it will stall unless ya tickle throttle

its deffo getting fuel though as when ya hit the throttle alot and it stalls ya can smell fuel

what else could it be

its not the heas gasket aparantly, not got excess presure from oil filler cap what ever that means and the plugs aint wet, leads and plugs are deffo new

please please help me, tryed using gunsons shit meter thing, what afooking loads of bollocks

car has a misfire though, thats the issue, it did start to miss and hold back about 5 mins before and when i stopped it cut out the fooking bastard

***STOP PRESS***

I know what it is.. especially as it was fine, then deteriorated really quickly..

It's the fuel pump... It's a small rubber pipe on the pump that's held in place with a metal clip that eventually slices thru the pipe and leaks the fuel back into the tank... There enuf pressure to squirt petrol if you undo the fuel rail feed and key it over, but not enuf to push it thru the injectors (2.5 - 3.0 bar)

Stu diagnosed this when mine did exactly the same thing and needed an AA recovery...

I fitted a 'stage 1' pump (standard EsCos) and it worked fine...

It's major grief getting the tank off tho... If you're doing it yourselve's, you need more of a lift than a set of ramps.. (you might be able to do it, but it's gonna be tight..)

I borrowed the corner of a friends garage and lift, and it was still aggro... ALSO.. make sure you don't break the metal retaining straps, as Ford don't do them anymore... and they'll be well rusty...

yeah i had no fooking fuel in it, oh and the gauge wasnt at the bottom and due to the music ive never know it to prime and when i checked it did make a orime noise, ok and loud prime noise due to n0 oetrol but ive never ran out before

insaying that that means i done 20 quid in petrol to get to the beds meet ( and trying to keep up with switch and oranocos 130+

oh and jim never mentioned the close call i had on the way back on the A1m over 100 and theres a car in the inside lane doing 45, its fooking traffic old bill, was so guilty that i slowed from 100 to 45 behind em till jimbo passed me as he got impataint

so its jims fault as i had to boot it to get home
