it's where a groove is machined into the block face around the bore ( a few mm away ) and a copper? ring is inserted. it helps the head gasket to seal better.

that's what i thought anyway

Absolutely not! The wire ring bites into the std head gasket, which if done properly, will give a very good seal around the top of the bores, albeit better technology is now available in the form of the metallic WRC gaskets (which weren't around at the time wire ringing was first done). My old EsCos (many years ago)was wire rung, and I never suffered any HG issues. You are correct about the surfaces of the block and head, but that applies to any sealing solution.

Wire ringing is not the same as 'Coopers rings', just for info.

Just use a cometic gasket, available for about a ton if you shop around

no need for any of this machining nonsense then

I'll be going with my tuners recomondations.

They have also mentioned the cometic (im sure i was told the head and block need to be machined flat?!) but they said wire ringing maybe the better option

charliesaff's engine i believe

That is called a rung bock, you'll need a cooper ring gasket also, this is where the fire rings are separate from the head gasket, the gasket costs roughly £250,
A wire rung block is slightly different, it has wire slightly embedded into the block a few mm from the bore

This is mine, it cost me £25 per pot to be done, by a very good local company to me. This (as Bill says) bites into the gasket to get a great seal. I would recommend it to anyone!
