Default Martial Arts

New Year...New Start

i see this as the best way for me to get fit and follow something ive always had a underlying interest other than Fords and Football (the toon are really starting to pi55 me off now)

Who does what and what do you recomend?
I've done Karate before and was good at it but i wanted to really concentrate on my football.(did me know good as i never was going to make a proffesional player LOL)

i've been looking at Kung Fu, any one had any experiences of doing this.

any advice or anything, resourses, websites would be great.

cheers

I do muay thai and it's the most effective allround fighting and physically the most demanding training

You get to use elbows, knees, shins, fists and it's full contact and a lot harder than for example teakwondo

I agree with hooligan, my sister did the full on thai and its really effective, made taekwondo that i used to do look like a few minutes of cuddling.

Definately the one to go for if you want it for self defence.

If its for fitness then i think any martial art is pretty good really providing you have a decent teacher and some motivation.

people tend to stop arguing with you after you've applied your knee to their face so it's pretty effective for self defence (or offence )

its the shins stuff that always impresses me, when i used to do taewkondo if i went to kick someone in the head and they blocked with an elbow to the shin it used to proper cane, but in thai these actually deliberately use their shins to attack, amazing how the human body can adapt its pain reflexes with a bit of practice

Easy: you hit with the part of your shin that's directly under your knee wich is mega-hard. The nerves in your shins go numb/die off very quickly along with the hairfolicles.

Don't forget there's a lot of technique involved as well: when you block a low kick with your shin you don't just lift up your leg but you twist your leg outward and curl up your toes...try both and see wich one you like best

My friend does tae kwon do and now is black belt.

He has now given up his normal job and taken teaching as his new job.

Depends what you want out of it really. All martial arts will aid with health and fitness, but as with everything, you get out what you put in.

If you want something that will be useful in the real world then i would agree with thai boxing, also kung fu and wing chun... all can be devastating.

My brother did Muay Thai.

I went to a training session with him once, and I couldn't stand up properly for a week! Unbelievably rigorous workouts they put themselves through.

He also saw some proper matches whilst in the far east, and said it was brutal!

HAHAHA, they had James Thompson fight Giant Silva. That deserves an owned caption. Good to see him get another win. Hes establishing dominance over the Pride Freakshow division.

Saw him fight Dan Severn live, that was a good fight.

He's sound, met him a few times as a lot of my mates are his mates.
He came out with us all on the piss for Ronnie Mann's birthday, funny watching all the bouncers shit themselfs

Being a big fucker with long arms helps too, he could reach over crowds of people and get my coat in the cloakroom

I was working at the place where the last Urban Destruction event took place, and ended up setting out all the seating with the Russian fighters they had bought over. They were fooking huge, at least 4 of them were at least James size. Did sod all work mind, they were meant to be helping us. Wasnt going to complain though.

Took the words right out my mouth, I fight Muay Thai aswell!

Used to do Tae Kwon Do aswell but kickboxing is much more physical and demanding!

kickboxing isn't the same as muay Thai though!

Different techniques and different rules...kickboxing is the soft version of muay Thai really...
