just had another go with ther keys in, the steering lock was definately off. what is it likely to be held on by?
does the wheel itself have to be in a specific position eg dead straight etc?

has anyone got any more suggestions.
i have just spent the last 30 minutes pushing and pulling it from every direction and spraying a fair amount of WD40 down the sides of the retaining bolt.

using the palm of your hands, give a firm clout towards the front of the car on each side of the steering wheel. Repeat this and it *usually* pops off

Put the nut back on a few threads then grip the wheel and really pull it towards you and from side to side, the wheel should come loose and wont hit you in the face as the nut will stop it.

Using the palm of you hand hit the steering wheel top bottom and either side. Repeat this a couple of times and hopefully it will free off. If not you'll have to get a friendly garage man to use a puller on it
