I didnt receive anything today, did receive a letter a few weeks ago saying every 3mb customer was getting it for the end of the year. I was just downloading something and thought thats not the usual speed!

Sweet, i was a bit gutted when i left AOL as they were doing free upgrades.
But i went with NTL 3MB and hear rumours that 8MB would be available in the built up areas, but at a cost?
I can't see them upgrading me to 10MB for FREE lol

whats the point then, you could use that in a week easily
i'm f*cked off with NTL, and i'm going to get ADSL as soon as BT stop dicking about and get the poxy phone line installed (its a nightmare!)

There's nothing better than having your PC hard wired in to the internet

None of the shit that AOL dish out, such as 'Turn your PC off, reset the whole thing, reinstall AOL, uninstall the modem, put the modem in the oven, then reconnect it, waste 4 hours doing it, and it should be ok'
At least with cable, they can find the fault and exactly where it is, unlike BT who have to physically send someone out to the exchange to hav a look at what's wrong.
Anyway, ADSL is a pain in the arse with routers, cos you need to log on to ADSL, wheras with cable its always on, not logging in needed etc etc
EDIT: Just to add to this, the NTL hub is about 2 roads away from me
i was somewhat worried that a whois on my IP would return it as being connected to that exchange, which was a bit close to home. So now i surf the belfast hub as a proxy EDIT 2: Some interesting reading http://www.ntl.com/mediacentre/press/display.asp?id=797 What i don't understand is that 3MB users pay more than 2MB users, so when 3MB users are upgraded to 10MB will they still be paying the 3MB price, and will the 2MB customers on 10MB still be paying the 2MB price?
p.s God help you if you got a set top box

What I wanna know is what upstream we'll get. AFAIK its still on 128k
Which is hell seeing as I use remote desktop and FTP services on my home pc.

I done a speed test and it says my upload speed is 0.5mb. I have had ntl broadband since around 2000/2001 and it has onlu ever (fingers crossed) broken down 3 times aside from planned maintenance. The service has been reliable for these years. Wouldnt interest me going to adsl broadband, having to worry about how many metres your phone cable is or how far from the exchange you are. A technical article on the net said Ntl could turn on 25mb broadband today without upgrading there systems/servers.

In fact, they are piping 50Mb broadband to a school, a few businesses and some homes in the UK somewhere to trial the service
The next 2 years we'll be seeing massive increases in bandwidth, i'd dare say that by 2008 we will have the option of 100Mb Broadband, just like they got in Thailand
They have got such an advanced wireless network over there, one company has set up thousands of access points, so wherever you are in the country (more or less) there will be a wireless access point that is provided by the telecom company (i forget the name of them) So for about Ł15 a month you get wireless access anywhere you are, even at home
I'm doing well with wireless networks, being so near to London, practically EVERYONE has one. I can't even drive through my town without netstumbler finding in excess of 100 wireless networks
Have a read up on it
http://www.netstumbler.com/
Basically its a small program that you leave running whilst you drive about, as you drive (providing the refresh rate is set correctly) it shows networks in range, the signal strengh, and when they go out of range.
It also logs the wireless networks on a map if you got GPS on your laptop, so you can build a database of where networks are
Its better if you use an omni directional aeriel, because when you point it towards the AP the signal shows better, when you point it away from it, the signal drops. Its to give you a good idea of where the AP is

where can i get myself a cable modem so i can get this fookin 10mb service? i'm sick of 1mb max
i MIGHT be tempted to stick with NTL if they gave me the new STB or a cable modem

Arn't cable modems just like network cards? That's all cable is, a network.
I'm pretty sure cable modems can handle up to 100Mb without problems.
As for the set top box problem, i fucking hate STB, its a pain in the arse, especially when you have to keep rebooting it all the time cos you got no internet

That's why i pulled a crafty one, i went with BT for the phone, Sky for the TV, and NTL for broadband, meaning i get a proper modem
Ok, so it might cost more P/M but its the best setup
Dones some more research
Apparently the upgrades don't officially start till the 5th of december, people who were upgrade before were, erm....guineepigs
in a pilot scheme apparently, probably to see if the hubs could handle itSo, 2 days to go
