Default So how do you become a trucker?

I mean what do you do? Is there a school you go to to learn then you get your license and get a job?

Or do you get trained for the job?

Just wanna know really, was looking at the pay and hours and it aint that bad really.

You basically have to go thru the HGV, I think you have to start on the smaller trucks (class 2) for so long before you can go for your class one, and then start as a temp, cuz no one will take you on without experiance, the only way to gain experiance is driving for an agency...

Dunno where you've been lookin mate, but the wages per hour (unless you work for a really good company) are piss poor, yes you get paid well, but you have to work for it, i'd say most Drivers, especially while temping yor on 60 to 70 hours a week...

Thinking about it. While insurance sales is good, and I enjoy it, not really enough money in it unless I'm earning comission on it. Depends on when the new system is in how much I'll make.

You could always do what I done.

I went for a job at Brake bros and they paid for my hgv trainning and test and medical
I had to sign a 2yr contract which is fair enough.

Theres plenty of Employers out there that will do this for you, you justr have to look around.

Works out alot cheaper

wages are piss poor mate i was doin for a while got my licence thru the Army, and have worked on Agency`s for 10 years now its not good working 14 hrs a day mind, but you have to do it to get the coin built up unless you can get into a good firm but you only make the money by staying out a few nights a week and with me just havin the first nipper it was a no no. Dont get me wrong some firms will pay good but without expierance you got more chance of platting snot mate.

Hope this helps kind of

Andy

A friend of mine recently started driving for morrisons/safeway thru exxel logistics, they payed for all his training tests etc put him through the lot at no cost to him the only stipulation was that if he left the company for another job within 2 years he had to front for all the training etc apparantly there is quite a few companys running similar schemes now because there is quite a shortage of hgv drivers out there.

Unless the rules have changed since I got mine, you can take your class 1 as soon as you have your class2 licence.

There are a lot of pitfalls in the industry so get it right.

Get into the right company that are willing to invest in you, IE ADR, CPC etc...

You can earn a lot of money being a self employed driver and work for several agency firms.

Get you medical first, apply for your provisional, do your theory then take you training, couldn’t be easier

Im sure there are plenty of people on here that can give you advice

A PSV Stu, i have both

Manual PSV and Manual HGV Class 2 and i managed to get both companies to pay for all fees and test

I've done bus driving, coach driving and now truck driving

Although my current employer paid for the class 2 and i prob only use it 2 or 3 times a week

Good thing to have tho.
