Default S2 ERST steering column bushes ?? URGENT

Hi,

I need to fit a new bottom steering column bush as my old one has shattered. From having a quick look the only way I can see to get the steering column out is to take the whole front of the dash out which is a bit of a mission, is this the only way to do it ???

cheers, Duncan

No mate.

Take the steering wheel off, the cowlings and then the switched. U'll see 2 13mm nuts - the top clamp, and if u reach round under the dash there's 2 more. Undo these and it will pull straight out.

Yeah ... A lot easier than you think.
Change the lower and upper bits all at the same time .. and check the horn slip-rings are intact and make contact ok when you put the wheel back on.

right, got it all out but does the middle plastic bush go inside the bottom black section inbetween the tough spring and the lower plastic bush ? Also, which way round does it go ?

Yes it does. One edge is concave - goes against the lower half of the bush - but some greece on the surface so it slips easy. The LARGER end of the spring goes into the steering column first and presses against the first rib of the collapsable bit.

If u look at ur new bush, it has a groove in it. When u tighten the steering wheel, it pulls the shaft and hnece the this push up into the column (u slide the new bush over the shaft - the spring stops u putting it in the coloumn). Make sure the new bush is aligned with the groove in the column. Tighten the steering wheel before u tighten all the column mounts or fit any switches - to drawn the lower bush into the column. It's quite tricky - if u get someone to tighten the steering wheel whilst you put ur head in the footwell to check its aligned, its much easier.

If its not aligned proper - u get all sorts of problems - i know.

Ford dealer ... ! Hang on I'll look it up ....
You need really to change at least .. 7, 8, 14 .. total cost around Ł6.00.
You're probably on about Item 8.

If it feels fine dont try to fix it if its not broken mate.Youll end up saying "wish Id never started this" when it all goes pear shaped.

One thing ...

If the bush is really worn down .. the contact brushes for the horn may be worn too .. Its a jumper assy which snaps into the carrier. Check you are getting the contact afterwards when you refit the wheel ... !

i'm being really stupid but I can't get the column to stop moving up and down-

I have the three bit spring one plastic bush and one smaller plastic bush- what order do they go in??

Ive had the thing in and out about 10 times and everytime I put it back together I still get movement up and down when I push on the steering wheel- is there anything else that could be buggered?

help

You mean play in and out? .. or side play?
You must be assembling it incorrectly somewhere.

Do you have the slot on the lower column engaging with the raised rib/key on the large bush (next to the spring) when you push it together?
You need to be sure of this!

And make sure the shallow bearing at the top is tapped into the housing correctly.

Hi Jano ... Wondered where you'd been lately! On Holiday somewhere?

thanks for the help on looking at the diagram hadn't thought of that..

I only have two bushes - should I have more?

the bottom bush the larger of the two has a raised part for fitting into the column - I have made sure this slots in so sits flush at the bottom-

where does the other bush go inside no 1 ?

We dont know which bushes you are talking about!

Refer to the pic further up .. and tell us exactly what you have a problem with .. referring to the numbers there.

The bush pairs are 7/8 (lower pair .. .after spring, large end first, is placed in bottom of column) The larger one (7) locates into the lower column tube slot, as it is compressed and bolted up at positions 34 and 41.
5/14 This provides the top bearing/bush. The thin one needs tapping in to the lock housing assy.
9 is NOT a bush as such .. It's a support for the seal assy (which you should also check for holes) and fits inside 10, locating over the lip in the bulkhead/floor..
