Default Sapphire 4x4 Buying..

Can people tell me what to look out for when looking at cosworths, ie engine gearbox transfer box etc. Looked at one or two with a few niggles and just wondered if their easy to sort?

Thanks Neal

I would recommend taking someone with you who has had one, as this is best way, else if not sure then have it inspected, I would also recommend a HPI test to be safe, as what appears to be a bargain good car can soon turn into a money pit, but basics are to look for any accident damage and then check how it drives, and keep an eye out for any smoke. Good luck in finding one.

The first car had stone chips on the bonnet, some have dinted, and N/S rear arch where it meets the bumper has rusted slighty, and also has a few marks but all the panels are genuine, the other one is clean as fook but bit unsure on the engine, stage 1 chip and cone filter with a T38 on it! Both have FSH and have tons of paper work! Starting to do my head in now!

you will probably find this on a lot of cars that have been 'used'

and N/S rear arch where it meets the bumper has rusted slighty
this is a potential expensive problem as i dont like the way rear arches fit when they are replaced on sapph's , only way to be sure of no rust coming back is to replace the whole quarter [£150 from fords]

stage 1 chip and cone filter with a T38 on it
bit of a strange one, dont know why someone has fitted this to a stage1 unless it has been 'de-modified' , it wont make much odds as long as the fuelling is set up but you will not see any benefit from this turbo and it will be more laggy , if you are not planning big power cash this turbo in and get a nice 4x4 T3/T34 .48 on there.

have you asked the owner why he put a T38 on it? maybe worth asking

cheaper to sort the bodywork on a cos than the engine eg engine rebuild = min 2k could get full car professionally resprayed and a couple of replacement panels for around half that.

The owner has fitter the T38 as he said he was going to have big power for 1/4 milers, but his wife is expecting...so thats gone through the window! Ian i thought the same but its a difficult one..

I looked at two Saphires and had an RAC inspection done on both of them. The inspection saved me a fortune on the first car as it appeared pretty good and on the second car which I bought, allowed me to haggle a little. I have o admit though that even though I had the inspection it has still cost me a fair bit to get all the little bits done to make it mechanically A1.
