I would recommend taking someone with you who has had one, as this is best way, else if not sure then have it inspected, I would also recommend a HPI test to be safe, as what appears to be a bargain good car can soon turn into a money pit, but basics are to look for any accident damage and then check how it drives, and keep an eye out for any smoke.
