Anyone know anything about these cars , all I can tell you is its a 4.4V8 but I know sweet FA about them

I think they look imagine they are also VERY expensive if they go wrong,cost a fortune to run and lose value really quickly.

My mates stepdad had one. Sadly he died a few years ago and it now sits in the corner of the garage under a sheet

Personally I didnt like it much, it looks a bit naff in red with a body kit and HUGE rear wheels. Its got every gadget you could imagine, including remote starter (we used to take this piss and call it the "German porn star car!"

Dont expect a sportscar though, Its more of a big comfy cruiser.

And it cost HOW MUCH to run??

 

Wasnt expecting a sports car tbh honest but I want a big motorway bruiser so I thought this would be a decent thing to go for either that or a 99ish M5 , V70 R , basically anything big but with all the comforts so I can just waft along effortlessly

I drove my mates 840 from Munich to Hamburg in 2001 and rate it as one of the best long distance cars I have ever driven. The return journey was as a passenger in an M5 and the return trip felt twice as long. The 840 glides along quietly at 200kph with no fuss and has a great ride but the M5 was tiring and surprisingly unrefined.

I guess its money really Rich , I can go out and buy a mint 840 for 7K or spend double that on an M5 but what would I get to warrant the extra 7K

are you sure its a 4.4? up to about 96 they were a 4.0 and had issues with nikasil bores wearing out prematurely. if its got well past 100k miles and has no smoke or starting problems or has had an engine swap for an alusil one you SHOULD be ok.

Seems a lot of car for the money but looks a bit pimpish. As a motorway mile muncher I wouldn't have thought you could go far wrong if you buy the right car.

 

Pops they go for a lot less than that

The early V12s are selling from 4K+ , amazing really considering how much they were when new

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much car for the money. They can be REAL money pits though mate as they are over complicated, but its got alot of class for not much cash.

 

They do look lovely though and someone has said aslong as I buy a 4.4 V8 version thats been looked after I should be over the moon

Ill be able to Glide effortlessly along the M42 swimming in the luxurious leather wondering what the hell half the buttons do whilst creating a massive hole in the ozone layer

 

apparantley the aircon you can one half of the car a diff temp than the other half great if youve got a moanin missus whos always cold

We've had an 850csi for a couple of years and it was a truly lovely car to drive.

Great on long distance journeys, not the best a-b on country roads cos it's a huuuuuge car.

Servicing wasn't cheap, but might be better if you use an independent rather than the dealership we used.

Things like brake discs were VERY expensive though, special back order from germany with a three month lead time
Fuel consumption was a joke, computer went straight to 14mpg a few minutes after you re-set it, I reckon it wasn't able to compute lower than that !

Great things about the car were sheer comfort, effortless progress, you can wind front and back windows down, open sunroof and feel like you're in a convertible, and yet, you're not.

Back seats were a joke though (as in most 2+2 coupes).

I keep having a look every now and again for another 850csi as I'd love to own one again.

 

only reason i didnt go for one of these after i looked at a few is the fact it won't fit up my flocking driveway

 

Graceland, they are apparently also larger than the standard size for a parking space as defined by the highways agency or whatever.

Either too long, or too wide, can't remember, but technically, they don't fit

840i auto does 0-60 in about 7 secs,6 speed manual about 6.2 secs.both limited to 155 but derestricted should hit 170. 286bhp/300lb/ft .manuals like rocking horse doo doo.get one if you can.

850csi is 380bhp iirc, dunno about torque.
Didn't think they did manual 840's or 850's, thought the 850csi was the only manual with six speeds.

I'm sure I remember reading years ago in a BMW magazine that BMW themsleves admited that the V8 engine they built was the worst engine they had ever made ....... If it were my money a E36 M3 would be on the cards
