The 1996 BMW 8 Series is available in two models -- 840Ci and 850Ci sedans. New for 1996, the 840Ci is equipped with a 4.4-liter, 32 valve V-8 engine and the transmission receives BMW's Adaptive Transmission Control and a Steptronic system of manual control. New features on the 850Ci include Servotronic variable assist power steering, which reacts to the actual speed of the car rather then engine speed. Also new, is an electronic damping control that adjusts the shock absorber setting to any change in road, load or driving condition. Standard features on the 840Ci include an electric sunroof and central locking system with crash sensor. The 850Ci upgrades the 840Ci with a 5.4-liter V-12 engine, 6 disc CD changer and cellular phone system.
