Default Wireless networks

DO you think its cheeky going on a wirless network which isnt yours? Only reason i ask is i got a new laptop and its detecting a wireless net which is mine! lol Its a low connection signal but still I live in a detached house so next door must have pretty strong signal. It comes up as 3com

Its ok to talk via msn etc save using up my connection while im d/ling on main comp

yes, do it... their own fault for not securing the bloody thing

also rememmber, just becasue it's broadcastin the SSID doesnt mean its not running WEP or WPA encryption.

altho if the thing's still called 3COM then i doubt it

Since I used to deal with "abuse" complaints aimed at people who had left their wireless networks unsecured, and remembering the amount of work in persuading them that their unsecure wireless network was allowing people to abuse their connection (I still laugh at the person who claimed there was no-one else with access to his house to plug a cable into his wireless router - he eventually clicked, took a while ), I'd suggest popping round to your neighbour and letting him know...

still perfectly feasible Kev... it'd just take a while. WEP is a pretty poor encryption protocol from what I've been told. Somethign to do with initialisation vectors meaning that 128 bit encryption isn't actually 128 bit encryption. Granted, most home users aren't going to go to any further lengths than that, (if they do bother at all!) and generally it's adequate, but there are better ways, such as using ipsec/l2tp over a vpn client etc...

PMSL you should see the amount of networks you can get on round here in london!

Netstumbler and a wireless PDA and your laughing. You can even guess the default passwords for the routers and play about with the bandwith settings

If you put some foil on the wall between you and next door, that will stop them picking up your signal
