Default Weird boost problem that i aint got a clue about!!

hmmmmmmm, im stuck on this one. my s2 (running 208bhp), has an annoying problem that i havent seen before. When you go for a play in it and really boot it, i get this particularly strange fast clicking noise coming from somewhere behind the clocks (or so it seems). It doesnt happen when driven lightly, only under lots of boost.

Now i ignored it because i thought the clocks were fucking around. so when the clicking noise happened again, i didnt back off and just carried on driving it hard through the gears. but then it sounded like a boost hose had split (air leak noise) and was losing pressure. i pulled up to a roundabout, dipped the clutch and it stalled (like a boost hose was off and i had no pressure at all). eventually the car started again and drives fine again, but only under light load.

under heavy load, the clicking is still there, if you back off when you hear it, the car is fine and has no other problems!!!!

I have checked all boost hoses and everything! Part of me thinks the dump valve is fucking up and cant cope under high psi.

I NEED HELP!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

could the dumpvalve, u can proberly hear the clicking from the engine bay coming from the hole in the blukhead where your speedeo cable comes through, or the clicking could be the speedeo cable itself, but this doesnt lead to your problem

its more than likely an air leak somewhere, do u run a boost gauge?, check the vacumm pipe going to it, has slipped off a bit?, or chaffed on the bluk head?

or could be pinking under load, but this also dont lead to your air leak noise

No its deffo not pinking. the clicking is a fast clicking as if the speedo cable is slipping in the clocks or something.

but why this problem has come at exactly the same time as this air leak noise is beyond me!! probably just coincidence!

But as mentioned, i sometimes just have the clicking on its own and if i push it beyond 5k, it dumps air! but when it does, the air continues to come out for a bout a minute! and then wont run properly for a small period of time (usually after stalling!) so im deffo thinking the dump valve!

My series 1 gives me the same noise when i go over bumbs etc, the problem is the indicator relay is fooked and clicks away to its self for a while. I recon this could be your problem, try it and see.

try it with out the dump valve, that will poss stop it stucking unwanted air in and stalling

but the clicking is it poss a different fault eg speedo cable (not related to the another one)

hmm, could be. but it did it again today but without the clicking???????? caned it to 120mph, (on empty road ), then backed off and had a huge hissing noise from under the bonnet. slowed the car down, dipped the clutch and the revs fell to ZERO!! (it stalled while still moving) i had to then essentially bump start the car to get the revs back up.

Thanks for your help BZD32, youve been great. (pint owed)

hi D200RST

the huge hissing did nt sound like the dump valve stuck open then.

i take it, when you blanked the dump valve off before it did nt make a shit of difference

please write back mate

hi mate, why didnt ya introduce yourself???

popped to STS and they quoted 262 quid to do the starter! went down ford and picked a new one up for 73 quid and fitted myself.......... says it all!!

still have the problem, still awaiting on a dump valve blanking plug!

anybody know of any other reason why my car sounds like its dumping pressure all the time?? when you put your foot down, you can hear a whooshing. im currently blaming the dump valve. (but the dump valve still dumps gas when changing etc. The car used to run 18 psi but now struggles at 14psi........
