Default trackday set-up. advice welcome.

done my first trackday yesterday in my fiecos. at Lydden hill (kent)

and found out how bad it handles.

unstable under brakin into corners, huge understeer on slite power, but good on full power out of corners.

i was runnin avo coilovers, with 300lb front springs. ? lb rears.

nankang 215/40/17's, on 22-32psi cold pressures

so i need to stiffen it up abit, and get some proper tyres.

Wot spring pound'age should i be lookin at?

Wot tyres are best for a 500bhp 4*4 cossie for trackdays( but road legal), with out puttin real strain on transmission?

cheers danny

Loads of things may help initially.

Have the brakes been set up correctly? Has the car been corner weighted ?

Have you tried disconecting any ARB's if your running them ?

Can you try smaller wheels ?

Its all trial and error - to suit your driving style.

The car is so custom thatI think the first thing would be to get everything adjustable and then start tweeking. It will be hard to find out of the box solution that will work.

According to what some people say new Avos ARE actually pretty good even in competition conditions.

What do you call dampers?

Never driven a car with the new ones on, but his are the old kind as far as i know.

There are lots of options available, really depends on budget...

Ohlins
Pro-Flex
Bilstein
GAz ? these any good ?

Maybe start with some adjustable TCA's and some compression strutts to get a bit of adjustment, with some coil overs, helper springs, maybe 300-350 on the front and 250 on the rear ?

There is a huge difference between a damper (designed to be a dapmer) and a load bearing strut (designed to be a load bearing strut) yes !!

Mate, i believe you may have experienced one of the most difficult race tracks to master in the south of england, dont go changing things around too much until youve been round Lydden MANY times!! As for AVO's , unless they are valved specifically for a certain weight car, bin them ! 3 of the SEMSEC guys continue to use these bloody things and are consisitently 3 seconds off the pace there , im not joking either .
Lydden is well known for being a bastard to get round , there is precious little run off, chessons drift is off camber , uphill and a blind summit where the car goes light and the back steps out , thats normal , paddock needs total commitment to get round under full power .
Its no wonder Mclaren own it , it was due to be a proving ground for them , certainly is for me anyway !! Im there 21st may all being well , cant wait .
Regards
Tony

cheers chaps.

the brakes werent a problem,

i believe it to be down to tyres and springs.

the first outin was horible, wet, no grip at all in my car, cars were over takin me in the inside, goin thro puddles.

2nd outin , dry'd and startin to get hang of track, and gettin used to the movement of my car.

3 rd outin got well into it, keeepin up with some race cars( ones that were lappin me in 1st and 2nd outins.

some pics.
me in my fiecos, and my bro in the white gtir.

Really enjoyed ourselves and had a couple of celebrity cars in our session.

You should be ok with transmission on track with slicks. I wouldn't want to launch an R+D with your power on a grippy surface with grippy tires though.

Slicks will totally transform the way your car handles on track BUT once you have tasted em, normal tyres seem PONY! even track tyres like Dunlop D01s or D02s or Yokohama A048's just feel SHITE! Slicks work out cheaper as well in the long run...

But they are a pain to change and obviously you need more wheels as well.... Mike does a nice Michelin sport track tyre. Really grippy and road legal. Cheap as well. PM Gaybird, he will sort ya. If you need Slicks, Marcos ya man

hi mate , sounds like youve got a bit of a job to do , but , i would trust tony ryans judgement on the type of track thing - he should know, as for advice on settings its very hard because its such a one off car, i expected the car to have a little off power understeer m8 ( due to u know what ) but what is really good is the power out of the corners , rather than let off to go round the corners try to trail the throttle a bit and carry the power on through the corner ( listen to me - sound like a fookin track expert ) it is 4wd after all

from what i can see youve done exactly what i would have done - actually got out there and had a go - driving on the road tells you fook all - after everytime you got out you will make an adjustment , some good , some bad , a bit of perseverance will see you loving the car and haveing max out time -- good luck them spring rates ??? not my choice for a dry tarmac circuit - especially since you dont know the rears , and the avo's will always be in the class of fast road im afraid
