Default Feedback on Silkolene PRO S Please!

We now have a number of PF Members using Silkolene PRO S 10w-50 or 5w-40.

We are looking for some technical feedback on the performance/differences that you have noticed since switching oils.

How does it compare?

What are the differences?

Is it better and why?

Thanks in advance,

Cheers
Simon

i have nver used it, but i just swtiched oil form Castrol RS 10/40 to Agip Fully Syntheic 10/50 and it is too thin - makes my car sound like a 1100cc fiesta on cold startup

how much is this stuff anyway, inc postage.

i got some silkolene pro s 10 50 off stu to try. i have always used castrol rs 10 60 but i wont be going back on castrol.

the car sounds much better on silkolene especially on a cold start and the engine feels to be looser if you can understand what i mean. its a fairly new engine build approx 5k so will be loosening up more with use but i could tell the difference as soon as i put the silkolene in it tends to rev much easier and still sounds quiet even after 30 mins of hard driving which suggests to me that its withstanding the heat generated.

the other good point is you get 5 ltrs instead of 4 ltrs so if you need to top up between oil changes you dont have to buy more, although i havent had to top up between oil changes yet.

I am using Silkoline PRO S 10W-50.........

a. Deffo slightly better performance (feels like a few extra BHP)...

b. Better oil pressure hot and cold, especially at idle after a hard run (on Es Coss oil guage)....with the previous oil (Castrol RS 10-60) the pointer would be just on the red zone at idle after a hard drive BUT with PRO S it is 3-4mm off the red zone.

It's way too specialist for the likes of Halford.

It's on offer until 10th May @ Ł27.50 for 5 litres plus carriage.

Our list price is Ł32.49 plus carriage

Retail is Ł45.00!

You need to call or email me (01209 215164) sales@opieoils.co.uk

Well,
Ive always dissliked Castrol RS in the YB and CVH Turbo as many old school forum members will remember as ive had a few heated discussions about it causing follower rattle on Hydraulic Fords (Whatever happened to Andy? That argument was legendary.. top man ) I dislike both its cold thickness and its hot viscosity when not used with an oil cooler. Ive always been convinced it is NOT what it says on the tin.. Its deffo not made by Ronseal

I do however love Mobil 1 motorsport and have used that in customers cars for many years unless specifically asked to fill with RS (Some people request only that, so i do as im asked)

After a chat with Simon at Opie i took delivery of some Silkolene Pro S 10w 50 and tried it in my own YB for a while.. results?

This Pro S appears to be better when cold and better when VERY hot for the YB. In fact, i concur that engines ive drained of RS10w60 and refilled with this oil appear to have gained a few noticeable Gee Gee's. I put this down to the frictional losses dropping within the engine now its having an easier time pumping the oil around. I dont believe it protects any better or worse that M1 MS but im convinced its far better than the RS10w60.

With regards the pumping pressures of 10w60, i have noted over the years that most of the oil pump driveshaft failures ive seen and heard of that have wrecked engines were running this hard to pump 10w60 RS as well..

Final 2 comments:
1) Its red. Sound a daft point? Its a great point when your oils always clean and you cant see it in low light on teh dipstick

2) It comes in 5 litres. Bargain IMO.

Hope this is the kind of feedback you wanted and im not just waffling.

It's a 5w-40 or 10w-50.

The 10w-50 is the same thickness as M1 at 100degC but has better cold start protection when you turn the key. This is important as 80% of the engine wear occurs on start-up.

Depending on oil temps, you may be better using the 5w-40 as this if perfectly fine up to 120degC.

Cheers

You can use either but if it's highly modded and used in competition then the 10w-50, if it's a nice stock daily driver then 5w-40.

i use the PRO-S and can honestly say it is excellent.my car runs about 230bhp and gets used very little with sometimes a couple of weeks passing before being used again. on these occasions i would always get rattle from the top end, be it followers , rockers or whatever, but since switching to PRO-S i get no rattle at all. i recently took the car off the road for about 5 weeks and when i started it up it was rattle free i have also noticed slightly cooler running temps. also before with the old oil if the car was driven really hard it would always sound like it had been driven hard when you stopped ( if you know what i mean, the engine was slightly louder and more rattly ) but now it just sounds smooth and spot on.

also love that it's red

Stu - what u think of valvoline racing 5-50?

My oil temp rarely goes above 190F so far, so a thinner oil is probably better.

I got the Pro S 10w50 off a dealer over here in Belgium and I just had it put in my car.
When I'll FINALLY get my car back, I can test the stuff.

Coming from Castrol RS 10w60 so should be good according to you guyz.

Red coloured normally means bike oil...ie good for transmission and engine.

My Duke runs Castrol R4 superbike

My Cossie runs Mobil 1 Motorsport

My 2 strokes always ran Sikolene Pro2 VERY impressed...so may have a go on this Sikolene oil in my new build
