Default Starting on 3

Hi

Every morning, my car starts on three.

If i rev it for 15 seconds or so it clears and i wont have any problems until the next morning.

What could be causing this?

Thanks

Tim

Could be a boost leak of some kind, i had the same problem, and realised one of my hoses was split. Bet the problem goes away when it warms up?

a well set up car should start fine, do you have a signal going to the electro magnetic pressure actuator on the side of the metering head ?

on MFi i thought the cold start valve was green and was below the knock sensor on the right hand side of the inlet manifold....

the blue plug is the ECT, engine coolant temperature sensor

yeah me too, its called the ECT... and is a blue plug...

well it is on my EFi motor, dont know why it would be different...

not the same thing as the temp sensor on the thermo housing, that just tells the fan when to switch on...

this tells the engine how much fuel to inject depending on the temperature of the coolant etc...

mine does it since i changed inlet manifolds without swapping injectors,
a leaking injector allows for no pressure/vacuum so fires on 3 on start up,
mine fires on 3 every time i start up unless i rev it, just need to get
round to replacing injectors. it wont harm your car

Have you tried a new set of plugs ?

I have had a plug with a crack in it before now, when cold it was a nightmare but when warm worked perfectly. Just a thought

I have this problem and i narrowed it down to the spark plugs.

i was speaking to a supplier of denzo iridium plugs not so long back, and told i had this problem. he told me any car that is running 20% more power than standard is obviously going to run hotter so 'colder' rated plugs are needed. i have got ngk plugs in mine and they need replacing every 4-5 months.

the denzo plugs cost Ł52 but if you get the right 'coldness' setting for the car they will last for 70,000 miles.

might be worth checking yours havent cracked. they somtimes crack inside so is unnoticable.

yeah i think spark plugs can sometimes play a big part with ignition type problems with these cars...

mine seems to run better with cheaper copper plugs in, compared to Ł40 platinum plugs

Could be totally unrelated & don't want to scare you: but this is what mine was doin on the S2 a while back now. It was traced back to a plug which was rusting up, and ran lumpy until it had 'burnt' the rust off & ran fine. The cause? Head gasket leaking water onto the plug: when the engine wa hot tho, it evaporated any moisture in there & so only showed u pfrom cold after it had been stood for a while & the water had got onto the plug. Result= Rebuild with head skim & no problems since.

Check your plugs from cold & have a look at them. If it's rusty then there is water getting in. If it isn't rusty, then could just be some new plugs needed...I hope it is just the plugs you need mate.

when i bought my car the cold start wasnt connected and the the car had exactly the same problem as yours. i connected it and it made no difference. i put it down to a leaky injector and have spoke to power n enginering and they agreed it it was most likely to be an injector problem. they are often a problem with them, cos there manual injectors you cant get them cleaned but i think there only about Ł20 or so each.

I have the same problem, still not sure what it is though. I also have a problem with drivng the car as well but I'm not sure if the 2 problems are connected. When I boot it the car coughs a bit through the top end of the gear when the turbo is in. If I'm in a higher gear where it takes longer to get through the gear I get a bigger cough, a bit like a bang. Anyone got any idea what this might be, I'm hoping it's a problem with the one of the injectors.

I discovered the other day that I need a new petrol tank as mine is leaking near the top, would this cause my car to run much slower if it doesn't have any pressure?

you will find its down to the metering unit where the difference in air to fuel ratio is slightly down when starting there is a gap in the air flow meter
