Default Engine Locked up

Hi, got the RS fired up with a brand new lump…. Runs for 1 or 2 mins with decent oil pressure etc then bang!! And just stops dead. Tried to turn start motor n nothing.

stripped starter and it had seized up and was damaged so guessed hadn’t disengaged n locked engine.

New starter motor fitted and she fires up and makes a god awful like scraping sound.

Take all plugs out and spin on just starter motor and spins over without a noise.

what could of happened?? Don’t want to go down wrong road. But have a awful feel the engine I bought is goosed now.

thanks

Did you inspect the flywheel to make sure it hadn't taken a few teeth with it when it locked up? Could be shite floating round in the bellhousing and bashing into the flywheel/clutch assembly?

Hi mate, yea all teeth on both starter and flywheel were fine… with new starter fitted and no plugs the whole engine spins smooth as can be… the second it fires up under its own steam it makes this horrible sound like a ring scraping… hard to explain but it’s horrible and you turn it straight off.

Would a starter locking up be strong enough to stop an engine dead on tick over?? Or could the starter just be a coincidence 🙈

cheers

Hi mate, not pulled head but taken rocker cover off and turned engine over a spanner and seems fine… if you spin it on starter it’s smooth as can be… once you connect plugs up and it fires up the horrible sound starts… sounds like scraping metal.

no idea what it could be, going to have to strip engine I guess but don’t want to go down wrong road and do a load of work for nothing.

cheers

brand new alternator, did yours only make the noise once engine fired up?? strange thing is it only started making this noise since the engine locked up…. I’ll pull belt and give it a try before I strip engine, I’d be so happy if it was the alternator.

cheers

Big Lee,

I could kiss you pal… it was the alternator!!! No idea how the starter motor jamming the engine somehow took out the alternator at exactly same time but Im so glad I didn’t pull the engine back down…. Thanks mate
